Travel Insurance Direct seems to offer some reasonably priced policies if you're happy purchasing online.

Otherwise, I Toursafe and Covermore offer very good levels of cover, but are generally more expensive than purchasing a policy online.

It'll depend on what you need.

Be aware that some companies, like 1cover.com.au, don't pay anything if your flight is delayed due to mechanical reasons.

A search of the boards here will turn up heaps of info, but ask specific questions to the (insurance) provider too...

Thanks TG and Happy Dude. That travel insurance direct looks good - i have some of the trip on my platinum CC but wanted to add a low-cost other cover for the bits that arent (eg. FF seats that i've booked etc).

Cheers

James

Travel Insurance Direct is not that great if you are over 49 (wow, how old!). Premiums are loaded by an extra 21% for such oldies. Is this ageism, I wonder?

Anyway, I find that Zuji's travel insurance (also underwritten by Allianz) is quite a bit cheaper if you are an oldster, and is also pretty comprehensive (I've checked quite a few disclosure statements).

Guess I'll be sticking with Zuji for insurance (but not for anything else).

I took out webjet insurance earlier this month - $299 - covers the whole family - partner/spouse and all children and goes for 12 months - international all countries.

I have just (like this afternoon) taken out 24 days insurance for the US for my wife and myself (both over 60) direct with Allianz for $245. I spent all day yesterday surfing the web looking for value and this was the best I could come up with. Just go directly to the Allianz web-site and follow the prompts. I was fascinated to see how much cheaper the same (Allianz) product was when shopping direct rather than through an agent. The top cost was $600+ - significant difference!

FWIW

Thanks, that's great advice. Just checked, and Allianz direct is a few dollars less than Zuji for my requirements, and is basically the same policy.

It appears to have gone up to $399:

Cheap Travel Insurance & Online Quotes - Webjet Travel Australia - Webjet.com.au

Also, this policy does not pay for deposits (eg pre-paid hotels, car hire, ski lift tix, etc) and additional expenses incurred in the event of:

Section 1.2

g] Delays or rescheduling by a bus line, airline, shipping line or rail
authority.
i] The mechanical breakdown of any means of transport.

I wouldn't recommend this policy if you have onward travel and/or tours booked separately to the departing carrier (unless, perhaps, there's 24hrs between connections).

I've used Worldcare for the last two years. The insurance appears to cover problems with misconnects between separately booked travel arrangements, whereas many do not, or only do so for special events.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Would be worth checking out the travel insurance that may be included on your credit card FOC if you used the card to purchase it... Might cover what you want.

Travel Insurance Direct - TERRIBLE!

Signing up is all very easy but claiming is another matter!
10 working days is quoted for them to process a claim.
Abour 3 working days after submitting the claim a text appeared on my mobile saying a letter was being sent.
I waited and waited. After about 8 working days and numerous phone calls and emails of inquiry I was told I would be sent a letter.
About a week later I received a call asking lots of questions. I was told my claim would be taken to the assessor and I would receive a letter.
I inquired about the earlier text and letter supposed to be sent.
After about another week, no letter.
I called again and was told a letter would be sent. I advised them that I'd been told two letters were coming and I received nothing.
Finally I received a rejection letter saying they would not pay up.
I am appealing the decision.
Wording on the claim can be twisted their way so they can exclude everything and they don't have to pay you.

Welcome to the forums JeanC - I wonder if the delays related to the fact they were denying the claim (and if they were paying that it would have gone more smoothly) and were stalling for time.

Can you share any more info about what the claim was for and why it's been rejected?

I just got a quote from www.aami.com.au

Travel period November 15 - December 7
Valid for all countries except USA, Japan, Canada and countries in Africa (I'm going to UK and Egypt)

$200 excess

All for $90.44 - this is at least $100 cheaper than other policies I've seen.

$200 excess. Most travel insurance policies only have $100 excess. Personally I pay an extra $25 to reduce excess to $0 with Travel Insurance direct.

For future reference try the following travel insurance sites (quotes are for your dates of travel)

Travel Insurance Direct $124 Worldwide ($105 for Europe and Africa)
Online Travel Insurance $142 Worldwide ($128 for Europe/Asia)

Note I have a 10% discount for Travel Insurance Direct, anyone can use it, which brings the Europe and Africa quote down to $94.50 and only $100 excess....

Thank you JohnK. words of wisdom indeed. Haven't booked anything yet so I'll check them out.

All booked with Travel Insurance Direct for $96.50 using a discount code easily found through Google. The extra $2 was for some Himalayan teachers convention. I'm a sucker for doing my good deed of the day!

Thanks JohnK. I'll recommend this site to friends.

Dragging up an old thread to say thanks! Just purchased TI through Travel insurance direct... a google search gave me a $10 discount code bringing the total cost to only $77 (yes with $2 donation to Kimberly Kids... great idea for fundraising!)

Finding a $10 discount code is good.

Travel Insurance Direct keep sending me offers for 10% off for friends and family. On an annual policy that is a saving of ~$35.
