I'm flying QF J (and travelling with a WP) SYD-LAX in January. We are looking at a connecting AA flight that leaves from Terminal A at about 6pm that evening. With a c.7 hour lay over (and checked bags), would we be able drop our bags and then leave the airport for a few hours?

In theory you should be able to because the flights the same day, you should be ticketed and provided boarding passes in SYD for both flights and the bags will have been tagged through from QF to AA.

The US internals will be on a different PNR but in my experience the QF SYD desk are fairly lenient about checking bags through.. Especially as its another OW carrier.
