While status credits are earned as normal, keep in mind this is the points earn arrangement:

Each Qualifying Holiday will earn 3 points for each AUD or NZD dollar spent and may only be earned by one member of Velocity Frequent Flyer for each Qualifying Holiday package. Only the first member whose name is on the reservation record as the first nominated traveller may earn Velocity Points.

Under no circumstances shall the use of the Velocity Points and/or Voucher earn any Velocity Points.

Therefore, nearby (and expensive) holidays are going to be the best bet for points earn.
