Has anyone done The Canadian train across Canada which goes Toronto - Winnipeg - Edmonton - Jasper - YVR?

As part of a big trip I arrive (once I've booked everything), in YUL around last day of August. Plan on a few days there, then a few days in Toronto and to Niagara, and then the train over to YVR.

Apparently, The Canadian shares the rails with freight trains and can be delayed, so I best book a day in YVR before the flt home. (I don't need any more time in YVR).

Haven't done it, but observed a lot of the track! Going through Rockies particularly prone to delays, but they usually try to keep passenger trains moving. August should be OK weather-wise; the big delays on the tracks are due to avalanche/snow blockages in winter.

I think putting in a day's padding would be prudent.

Yes, I think a day or even 2, padding would be essential as many people complained about the very long delays even missing their flights home. They also complained about everything else too. Such a shame. I’ve done some good train rides, but I do require a certain level of comfort and service.

I may just got YUL to Toronto and catch the local GoTrain to Niagara.

When I did the Alaskan cruise there was a Canadian couple who almost missed the cruise in September because of flooding (can't remember where exactly but out in the large middle bit) and he used to work for the railways so still had very cheap fares
