This trip will contain many first experiences

- QF new J layout
- QF new J lounge in Perth
- First flight with Emirates
- First flight on a A380
- First time to NZ
- Clazgirls first time in Melbourne

Trip starts with a flight from Perth to Melbourne at 8am on Christmas Eve

Surprisingly the airport was deserted, not one person at security and on arriving at the lounge a total of 6 people lounging.

Great fit out, good coffee and worth the wait.

Surprisingly the bathrooms appear to be to small for the possible number of guests. In the men's there was two standard and a disabled cubicle.

Checking the booking the night before, found QF had swapped out the original aircraft with a new fit out, yahoo

Had to reassign seats as in the shuffle QF had separated us

Breakfast was great

- Strawberry energiser
- Greek yogurt with pear, Apple and cranberry
- Sour dough bread
- Salami, manchego and red pepper relish Turkish toasted sandwich
- and the obligatory tea or coffee

Three staff served us in J
- Max, best CSM I have experienced, introduced himself and had a conversation with every passenger, asset to QF
- training hostess, pleasant and like up in the air documentary on her first flight didn't know the menu and missed serving Clazgirl, but Max fixed up when he saw it
- Sorry the 3rd person can't remember his name, found his offering the complimentary boarding drinks to be wrong, it was like he had been working on Jetstar. Asking passengers would you like a free apple juice or water

Arrived into Melbourne slightly behind schedule and wasted no time jumping into a taxi to Southbank Hilton. For the record total fare was $55 which included airport charges and tolls

Checked in and straight to the DFO stores, have 2 hours

Christmas Eve we had dinner at www.ilbacaro.com.au on Little Collins Street, great little Italian restaurant, I little pricey but it is Christmas

Entree scallops, asparagus, asparagus purée, tomato and ginger

And not to forget dessert.....
Blood orange, yuzu curd, mandarin, buffalo ricotta semifreddo, blood orange sorbet
01451020598.jpeg

Agave nectar cheesecake with crystallised violet, crème fraiche, pop rocks, blueberry sorbet, and fairy floss

01451020652.jpeg

All up including 2 coughtails and soft drinks $205 .....

No taxi back to the hotel, a slow waddle and a walk through the casin

Awoke Christmas morning to the air conditioner in the room going bang..... Quick shower and down to the lounge for breakfast.

Hilton concierge had printed out what to do in Melbourne on Christmas Day and surprisingly the aquarium was open, so we took a quick 15 minute walk and paid $81 for 2 adults. If you get a opportunity it is worth th visit.

Wandered over the bridge and into the casino, queues before noon.....wow

After handing over my money, decided to go back to the hotel for a nana nap

Question, all the machines are slot machines, whilst Perth Crown has blackjack, poker machines, doesn't Melbourne have them?

Tried booking dinner at the Hilton, but they wee fully booked up and at $250 a head, probably a good idea to save some coin and order room service

Club sandwich

While I really like HSW, I have never ordered room service and won't be after seeing those photos. take it from the hand next to the burger you weren't that impressed either!

Arrived at Melbourne airport at 5:30 and initially went the QF checkin desks as the ticket was bought from QF and they displayed the QF flight number . Checkin girl soon redirected us to the Emirates check in desks. Moved through security and passport control in less that 10 minutes didn't need to use fast track pass. This must be the first flight out as the duty free shops had no staff and shops were still shut

Headed straight to the lounge, my thoughts on Emirates lounge

- better food selection than QF
- lounge seats iirc are easier to lounge in
- don't recall seeing arrivals / departure boards
- there is a strange aroma ( incense?)
- no bacon.. Which I understand why, but then they have alcohol
- great views of the runways and aircraft

Overall enjoyed my experience

Finally on board my first 380, first impression looks awesome.

Found access into the cabin, very narrow and the same into our seats, which were middle row.

When we arrived the divider was up and made me feel very claustrophobic , once the devider is down it is okay, even better if the devider went down 100%

Great selection of entertainment to select from, but found the Interface annoying and unresponsive, using onscreen or the remote or tablet. Liked the ability to have external camera view on the tablet whilst you watched shows on the main screen.

Food service was chaotic, they had plenty of staff, but they would setup the linen on 6 passengers and then run back to the galley and get their food, then set linen for another 6 passengers and then visit the first 6 passengers and offer bread and drinks and then start the process of getting the meals for the second set of passengers.

iMO slowed the service down and in my observing they missed serving some passengers bread and coffee. Saying that the food was good

Clazgirl and I both got the omelette, but the waffles looked awesome

In hindsight spending 3 days in Auckland was a waste of time, but at least i can say been there done that.

Visited the Skytower, admission $28 per adult

IMO the Sky City casino is a waste of time and with out doubt rather sort my sock draw than revisit.

Restaurants in the general area are pretty poor and charged top dollar, we took the ten minute walk down the hill to the marina to get a good feed.
