I have the following itinerary booked for 4 weeks time:

QF8 BNE-SYD 06:40-08:20 (1h 40m)
QF1 SYD-DXB 15:50-00:35 (14h 45m)
QF8017 DXB-MAN 07:15-11:45 (7h 30m)

and then the trip home

QF8018 MAN-DXB 14:10-00:15 (7h 5m)
QF8354 DXB-SIN 03:25-15:00 (7h 35m)
QF52 SIN-BNE 19:55-05:15 (7h 20m)

and all in whY ...

So the question is, do I put in for an upgrade to J on QF1 or QF52?

I have snagged 32K on QF1, which is an extra legroom seat in the small A380 upper deck economy section, so is it work 72,000 points to upgrade to J?

I've got 43C on QF52 (747 bulkhead), and it's 40,000 for an upgrade to J.

I'm leaning towards the QF1 upgrade, after 7 hours in the F lounge and a 15 hour flight leading into 6.5 hours in the DXB lounge, I'm thinking a lie flat bed might be nice ... Thoughts?

I'd wait and see........as a P1 - you'd have to be a dead set certainty for a free upgrade if it's busy.

7 out of 8 sectors in Y on two MEL-DXB-LHR as a 5000SC a year WP1 so don't hold your breath.

Thats no good. Reading some of the other threads it's kinda easy to believe that P1's are getting OPUP most of the time.

Better get the requests in quick smart.

Anecdotally, you could expect an 'op-up' on the EK leg, so I would put in for the preceding QF1 leg. If it doesn't come through, then any/all of the return flights. I would suggest that no matter how good the Y seat, the J seat will be better.

If it's one or the other then the question would be do you want to enjoy J asleep or awake?

I'd probably go for the longer leg, awake.

QF1 for sure - it's a 12½ hour flight ... I'd expect to try to sleep for at least 8, not so on the short one from SIN ...

It's actually nearly 15 hours!

Think I might have to break my resolve and put the request in :)

I have a similar dilemma to the OP.

QF93/94 MEL-LAX-MEL. Group booking so can't select seats until at the airport, but all the good Y seats are taken anyway. Loadings look very full in Y+ and J anyway so unlikely a points request will go through. But I figure I might as well try. Would you recommend the way there, so we can enjoy the better service, or the way back, so we can sleep? Currently have around 320k points and any request is for myself + SWMBO. Y+ upgrade is 45kpp E/W and J is 72kpp E/W.

Also have MEL-LHR-DXB-MEL booked for October. Have 71D/E for all segments so upgrading probably isn't quite as critical. thinking the MEL-LHR or DXB-MEL legs would obviously be the preferences there.. however it's a "Brazil special" so not an upgradeable booking class at the moment, would be pure luck if they become upgradeable between now and then.

Not sure why you would want to spend 2 hrs 25 mins in MAN, but it all sounds brutal !
I'd put in for both upgrades as they are the QF ones that are available to you for upgrading, & are more outright "night time". I try to plan my flights as night / day to help keep me oriented where possible.

QF8354 DXB-SIN 03:25-15:00 (7h 35m)
QF52 SIN-BNE 19:55-05:15 (7h 20m)

If it was me I would hang on to the 72,000 points as that's the points cost for a whole new ticket for another trip entirely.

I'd just use your P1 status to snag the best seats you can get in whY then you can always hope for an op-up.

I'm booked on qf1 and two months later qf2 in J. Trying to decide if worth using what little points to upgrade to F one way and then use gained points to upgrade on way back.
I don't earn points for work travel so it takes me years to earn enough points.

We've got a booking on QF11 and haven't hesitated to lodge a request x 4 into F. Pretty sure we have no chance however, you've got to be in it - to win it.
