I purchased 5 * $10 CBR-MEL tickets for my family (so $100 return all up) back when Tiger Airlines launched their services for travel on 16 August 2008. I know these are non-refundable tickets.

Since then they have emailed on two separate occasions to notify me that they have had to change the departure times of both the departing and return legs of the trip for 'operational reasons, ie they have moved these flights forward to accomodate the second CBR-Mel service they started'. I accepted their change on the first occasion but not really willing to accept another change. I think on both occasions the departure times have been made earlier an hour or so.

Anyway, do I have grounds to request a refund given the times aren't that suitable to me now or is it just tough luck for me?

I dare say like DJ and JQ, they would have a clause in their T&C's stating all they promise to do is get you there within a certain period of time, so i'd suggest unless the time change is significant (ie over 5-6 hrs) you wouldn't have grounds for a refund, and even then you may not get one.

As always though, Dont ask, don't get...you've got nothing to lose by asking.

But if TT refund you $100 are you not going to go to Canberra anymore?

If you didn't click to accept the email, then yes.

Call Tiger on their Melbourne number, wait for an operator (this will take quite a while). Advise them the PNR, and that you can't make the flights now that they have changed their times. WAIT for the operator to check what they are allowed to offer you, which will probably be -
  • a TT credit for future use
  • a complete refund
  • change to a different date/times without having to pay anything extra.
That is what happened last time I changed a TT booking, due to their schedule change. :)

Thanks Comint.

I called up the call centre and surprisingly didn't have to wait too long. Though it did take a few attempts to actually get the phone call to connect to their voice system.

Was given those options you quoted and I went with the full refund option :)

So you are going to go spend hundreds on QF/DJ for am extra hour or soSounds silly to me

This depends upon how the change effects. Sometimes these things reach a point where it's impossible to proceed. I think it would be better not to book TT in the first instant however each to their own.

TT are great, I wouldn't say people on this forum would like TT cause your all those FF people who like "food, legroom" and the whole rubbish package, lol

Agreed imapringle,

For some of us have to use our after tax money to buy tickets I prefer
to save money instead to use our job to get us status and fake smiles,
I am loved by many people unconditionally. :p

My past experience with Tiger is good, in the start of the year
we are on SIN=>DRW=>MEL and the SIN=>DRW leg is delayed by more than one day because of typhoon in DRW, not Tiger's fault, they offered us free 4start hotel + free buffet dinner + free transfer. Can JS match that ?
remember their HNL=>SYD delay some while ago ?

Again booked newcastle=>SYD for $30 pppw, flight cancelled,
I requested MEL<=>PER instead and they agreed to the free change !

It will be the first time to Perth for me.

Whoa, thats cheap to Perth now!I love tiger's service, its not fake(ie DJ/QF) and they wonder down the aisle chatting to everyone and playing with the kiddies, lol

imapringle,

The experience of a real number of people is that TT isn't so great with how they have treated people upon cancellation of flights. Unless I'm really stuck TT are off my list until they prove themselves some more.

For a flight of the duration we are talking about here I can easily live without the food/drink etc side however I can't live without the legroom. Fortunately (or otherwise) i don't suffer from ducks disease (like some) so the leg room becomes a necessity.

Quite a few here have to pay for themselves so you are not alone. As for being loved unconditionally I don't think I need to comment. :D

Excellent outcome however others have not had that same 'good' experience.

I assume you mean JQ. As LCCs I would not expect this treatment from either TT OR JQ.
remember their HNL=>SYD delay some while ago ?
... and remember several other TT cancellations. The comparisons are different and I believe, irrelevent.

JQ are currently doing the same thing for pax booked to Malaysia.

For Tiger you can also be guaranteed an exit row seat, which has lots of legroom, provided you paid for it $15 and book early and it will be yours, unlike QF/DJ/JS depends on the staff and whether they have other higher status pax who made the request.

I expect nothing from FAs, everytime I travel I put my BOSE noise cancelling
headset on and I sleep, service is not required, after-tax money in my wallet matters....

Also, I am on JQ SYD=>KUL which got axed as well, they let me change to one day earlier
but to SIN via DRW, it is a bit worse than before but because it is 20/Dec Xmas peak
so I can't complain much....

Well, you might as well not fly JQ cause they have:-comtaminated people in flights-The Sydney airport Saga (who cant forget this one)-Flight cancelled on JQ, well no refund, accom for youI could go on...... Tiger didn't cancel since April, and that is still occuring, unlike JQ who cancelled mega amounts weeklyTiger's OTP is better than JQ also, you will sometimes get to your location early, plus you can choose to pay for mega amounts of luggage/legroom seatsTiger has had a much better run than JQ has and even if a flight is cancelled, well I dont worry myself dead about it, I will continue to fly Australia True LCC, Tiger Airways!

well imapringle you sounds like an ad now ! :)
the sad thing is that I live in Sydney, so sometimes it has
to be with JQ/QAN/DJ, or I have to get to MEL somehow....

Given the excellent infrastructure projects/plans in NSW (i.e. Sydney)
I don't think a LCC terminal will be available for Sydney
for sometime.....

This apples to DJ as well. :D

imapringle,

It is easy to make unsubstanciated claims so I won't other than to say what you claim applies across the board for seat allocations and extra baggage.

With regard to ontime performance maybe the whole article should be included. Note that April was TT's first month of records and like all statistics you can read almost anything you like into it. Airline On Time Performance Statistics - April 2008 (Updated 20 June, 2008)

If you go back to the March statistics then JQ was amongst the lowest for cancellations.

Lets wait a few months until TT's figures get to average out a bit so we all get a good overall picture.
