As weird as it might sound, I'm thinking about throwing away the last segment of a JASA. Needing to do MEL-SYD with most of the day free to do it, I've decided to do MEL-xSYD-ASP-SYD. If it is booked as such, it's 60,000 points plus $153.49. However, if I book it as MEL-xSYD-ASP-xSYD-MEL, it would be 48,000 points plus $268.29.

Since I need to be in SYD by the late afternoon, I won't be able to take the flight down to MEL and back again, so I'm just wondering if there are any issues or consequences if I'm to throw away the last sector (apart from missing out on 80 SCs during the DSC promotion)?

Book the MEL return trip, and then after it has ticketed call up QF and change the final SYD-MEL flight to another date in the future. JASA fares are treated as Business in terms of flexibility, so you should be able to push this sector back and potentially use it at a later time rather than just throwing it away.

This does depend on the fare rules - some business fares allow stopovers.

Generally Australian Domestic business fare do not allow stopovers

These don't: (Stopovers are not even mentioned.).

Bookings - Fare Types

Here's the fare rule for full "J" Business class between MEL and ASP:
Code:
STOPOVERS
Code:
THE PROVISIONS BELOW APPLY ONLY AS FOLLOWS -
NO STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT.
NO STOPOVER OCCURS IF PASSENGER TAKES NEXT
        AVAILABLE FLIGHT WITHIN SAME DAY.
NOTE - TEXT BELOW NOT VALIDATED FOR AUTOPRICING.
TRAVEL MUST BE WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY

I've just called them up the other day, and they actually let me do it with a top up of $4.95 of the extra tax which they needed to collect since it was no longer a straight transfer. Although I only changed the flight to the next morning - figured that I've got some free time the next day, I might as well fly down to MEL, and get a red-e back. $110 or so for an extra 100 SC which I would've have got if I just threw the last sector away.
