First of all i need to start by thanking every single person on this forum! I have learnt so much off you and hopefully i have been able to give back to other members on the forum with replies to their questions as well..

I did the following run over 3 days. (2 bookings)
LAX-LAS-ORD-LGA-MIA-SJU-MIA-LGA-ORD-LAS-LAX $1044
LAX-LAS-LAX $512

I know the second booking was not at all efficient on cost.. But i wanted the SC to get me straight to platinum by the time i was back in Perth for a domestic JQ F Lounge run in July and another USA trip at the end of the year..

Anyway here are my thoughts on a few things having now completed it and for others who maybe thinking of doing a SC run soon?

In no particular order...

->The cookies they bake on board are EPIC!!!

->If you have several hours in a lounge? Check straight away with the staff if there is an earlier flight or if an earlier one has been delayed that you can go on standby for. I did this for a LGA-MIA which should have left before i landed in LGA. I was not really thinking about it until i heard that the plane would be delayed for another 20 minutes. The fact that i only had 40 min in MIA on the orginal flight prompted me to go and ask. I think that had i not got on the earlier flight to MIA i may have missed my flight MIA-SJU which was the last one for the night..

->SJU airport hotel is definitely worth it for a good sleep before the long day and a bit back to LAX.

->I found all staff were very polite and efficient whilst on board.

->Priority boarding just works!! I tended to board straight away to ensure there was overhead space.. Although never really had a problem for the couple of flights i boarded later on in the process.

->7 hour layover in LAS (12am-7am) isn't at all that bad if your real skinny like me.. ;) And push two lines of the fixed chairs up against each other and lie down the middle of them..

LAX Bed LoL.JPG

(Don't know why the photo has rotated itself..) :(

I found these seats behind one of the booths at a gate where the ground staff work at the computers and it just so happened to be roped off at both ends just for me! ;)

The hardcore part of the SC run was listed at the top of this post. But i actually spent a day flying BGI-MIA-LAX with parents and siblings the day before and then started my pure SC run..
Lap 1 was from when we left BGI to when i arrived in SJU i think i had 4 hours sleep during that time!? (BGI-MIA-LAX-LAS-ORD-LGA-MIA-SJU)

Lap 2 shows almost 72 hours however minus 8 as thats how long i was in the hotel for over night in SJU. So 63hrs 45mins is how long it took me to fly SJU-MIA-LGA-ORD-LAS-LAX-LAS-LAX-SYD-MEL. In which i had 5 hours sleep in LAS on the seat... And i think 10 out 14 in J for LAX-SYD.

Lap 3 is from when i landed in MEL to when i landed in PER. I stayed a night at grandmas and caught up with her and my other grandma before flying MEL-BNE-PER the next day..

->Make sure if you are doing LAS-ORD-LGA departing on the 12.30am from LAS. You should make sure that when you book the flights to have different flight numbers for the two segments. As AA392 also flies onto LGA and this will have implications on SC earn! I only picked up on this right before i was about to confirm my booking.. Luckily!

->If your flying on an MD80 then make sure you avoid all A and B seats as they all have less leg room than E and F!

->If you do book such a long SC run and your doing it at the end of a trip.. Then either stay a night in LAX to recover or make sure you fly back in business. I had booked Y+ and submitted a points upgrade from dads WP account.. Luckily there were several business seats not sold! I don't know how i would have coped if not upgraded.. My back was in a horrible condition by the time i got to the QF lounge and had to sit for almost 6 hours before QF12. Ended up lying down in the back corner where the fire exit is for a while and did some stretches.

->The flight that i went on standby for and managed to get on has not automatically credited to QF i have requested manual entry for this.

->I flew LAS-LAX twice on the last day before QF12 and the second flight did not credit automatically either. SO i have requested manual entry for this one as well.

Anyway i think thats all! Hopefully i didn't bore you all to death and someone can find some helpful info out of the above.. If you have any other questions? I will do my best to reply to them in this thread.

Probably should go send dad the 45,000 points i now owe him... ;)

Cheers gogo

P.S I'm really sorry that it was soooo long! :)

Nothing wrong with being so long, the more detail the better. Why didn't you find a hotel instead of sleeping at LAS?

Thanks for the info, some good tips! how many SC did you get [maybe I missed it in your post]?

If there was an airport at the airport then i would have booked it. But because i arrived at 12am and the next flight left at 7.10am i didn't think it was worthwhile... Actually felt alright after my sleep on the temporary bed.

Also one other thing i forgot to add in the original post.

How i passed the time in lounges and on the planes!?

I banked over 2 months worth of Hamish and Andy podcasts which got me through most of it! I tried to waste a bit of time in between podcasts etc to use up more time.. And then ended up watching a couple of movies on the last day.

Also i only had one big mental blank.. When i got off the plane in LAX on the last day. (I still had to do LAX-LAS-LAX again..) But my brain shut down as i walked off the plane and i had no clue where i was and where i was meant to go. I think i thought i was in MIA but nothing looked familiar.. Several minutes later of walking around pointlessly i realised i was in LAX.. lol.

LAX-LAS-ORD-LGA-MIA-SJU-MIA-LGA-ORD-LAS-LAX was 840 SC
LAX-LAS-LAX was 120SC
LAX-SYD-MEL was 100SC
MEL-BNE-PER was 35SC

I also earn't 380 SC from LAX-JFK-BGI-MIA-LAX when i flew around USA with the family.

So a grand total of 1475 now that i am back in PER. My year ends at the end of Feb. So i have almost two years of WP and a year of SG.. ;)

That is a lot of flying. Well done.

I find with 3 flights in a day I get tired and to do it 2-3 days in a row is painful.

Nice TR ... or is it advice? ... anyway I am moving it to the Trip Report forum as it's worthy!

I've highlighted some bits ... I have taken this or similar flights from LAS/LAX/SFO-ORD/BOS several times now an my MO is to select a window seat in the last row of first. I then use ear plugs and eyemask and sleep for the majority of the flight. (Sleep is normally not too difficulty,as I have had a few in a lounge before departure, although I do carry on as much water as I can drink.)

Anyhoo - I really enjoyed it as I was reliving many experinces I have had, even down to a ~10' x 15' SJU airport hotel room ... ;)

That's a good idea. It's important to have plenty of things like movies/books/shows to keep yourself entertained.

Thanks for your TR gog0419.
I have done a couple of similar status runs in the past and in October this year I have a SFO-LAX-LAS-ORD-MIA-SJU-MIA-ORD-LAS-LAX-SFO booked. We are staying for 5 nights in SJU this time as my +1 drew the line at an overnighter . It will be great to check out the place this time.

We might take up your suggestion of the last row in F for the overnight LAS-ORD, thanks Serfty.

+1 no longer has PP so we'll be with the riff-raff at the gate in LAS .
At least WiFi is free.

Re: Thoughts from the completion of a BIG!! SC run... With AA. (WARNING LONG POST)

PP comes free with Amex Platinum cards. Credit has 2 visits free, then $27, Charge is all free.

Of course, you can purchase single entry to "The Club" for $35 (IIRC) - keep an eye here - there are often specials: The Club Airport Lounges

1. Agree that AFF's value is all the wisdom of all the members

2. Don't like the MD80s - they are so noisy. Noise cancelling headphones are a necessity!

3. Don't have a good enough back to do that sought of journey anymore :(. Makes me feel quite old saying that!

LOL! I think most of us can identify with that. For me it's usually in some hotel. I'll wake up in the dark, wonder where in the world I might be, and when is my next flight. Having absolutely no idea of the answers is a worry, and not much better when I look at my watch and phone and computer and they are all on different times and days.

I take off my hat to you.

Re: Thoughts from the completion of a BIG!! SC run... With AA. (WARNING LONG POST)

And be prepared for problems when they occur. Yesterday I was doing SJU-JFK-ORD-DEN.

First leg was fine and I was happily ensconced in the Flagship lounge at JFK when I saw the JFK-ORD flight getting later and later. There was bad weather in the area so some delays weren't unexpected. However, this one was late enough that catching my next flight wasn't possible.

The AAngel held me a seat on the next morning's ORD-DEN flight just in case it was required. When I went to board the JFK-ORD flight the connection was going to be barely possible.

But it got worse, we sat on the tarmac for nearly three hours waiting for clearance to take off due to the weather, very nearly returned to the gate.

The captain told us we could use our phones if we weren't already. So I rang the Hampton Inn I'd booked in DEN to tell them I wouldn't be there and why. She had a look at the booking and advised me it wasn't cancellable. I told her I knew that but wanted to let her know I definitely wouldn't be there in case they needed the room. I told her I was calling from the airplane on the JFK tarmac.

She then said they could use the room because there was a problem there and gave a cancellation number.

We eventually got to ORD and AA was giving people who missed their connections vouchers for the local HIX to get a room for $67, took this, go my flight confirmed and got some sleep before heading to DEN today and the driving to Rapid City (about 400 miles). First time driving in the USA.

I had a chat with the FA on the JFK-ORD flight and the real reason for the delay was that a passenger went ballistic on their previous flight and they had to return to the gate to off load him.

So all in all a long series of events that have ended well and I am where I want to be today.
