Well #1 son has invited me to accompany him to southwestern India (on the cheap)

After a train ride, perhaps a number of "bus" rides and a good chance of taxis, we will end up in Mysuru (Mysore). With his return flights to Perth departing from MAA, we will need to get to Chennai (and a few days of being a tourist there).

Trujet flies an ATR72 once a day on the route MYQ-MAA.

Any experiences which people can (constructively, please) pass on regarding the airline or the area?

Again I'm wandering
Fred

PS: I did convince him to let me add The Maldives as a new country with a stop in Sri Lanka before the excitement starts.

Mysore was the former capital of Karnataka state before the British sort of took it.. its meant to be quite a nice city (at least by Indian standards) with a lot of historic sites.

You could also consider getting back to Bengaluru (approx 3hrs by train or road) where your options open up considerably.

Its been some time since I've traveled in that part of India, but i believe domestic airlines are now, not too bad, just avoid Air India.
