What is it about flying that makes me want to go back for more? Talking more about leisure travel here.

For me, there is a slight fear factor whenever I get on a plane, yet it still does not stop me! It's almost as if there is a slight rush and a sense of achievement that I've overcome this fear to get to somewhere that I'm not really sure I really wanted to go to in the first place?

No matter how many times I've become 'over it' and vowed never to fly (long haul) again for a very long time, I always end up back on a plane within months!

My logic is probably different to most here.

For many years for me it was because I was in charge of my own destiny, it was fun, it was meaningful, it was often challenging and I was being paid to do it.

Now, which is more in line with your question, I see it as a means to get to where I want to go to on holidays. On most occasions the actual flights are not that much fun.

To be honest I don't really enjoy flying all that much. It seems every time the plane speeds up the runway and lifts off I ask myself 'Why are you doing this to yourself again?' Should I have walked down the street to the beach and spent the time there instead?

However I do have a passion in life which is to travel far and wide. And often. There's hardly anything better than arriving in a foreign port and finding my way to where I need to go. I enjoy new sights, sounds, smells, foods and ways of doing every day things. I enjoy a challenge.

That and arriving in a frequently visited foreign port on the other side of the world and being able to help the locals find their way around and feeling quite at home. Familiarity with a foreign country and how things work and fitting in with how the locals live for me is a joy.

I like to be comfortable before and during the flight and consider myself so fortunate to be able to travel self funded in J class. I'm not on an expense account. It costs! As a result I expect at least a good to very good level of service from an airline and certainly make it known if things were not up to an acceptable level and if it is.

For me it's not so much the lure of the flight, but being able to experience a more pleasant means of being able to indulge in my passion which is travel.

+1 Me too...ever since my first (Compass!) flight:p

I have no fear of flying - I find turbulence more of an obstacle to not spilling my wine than at all unnerving.

For me each time I fly internationally it is exciting about what I will see when I get where I am going - even on business trips.

A simple answer for me, to avoid having to ever catch a greyhound bus again!

For me it's not the lure of the flight, although I do love being on a 3 to 4 hours flight, I find that to be a good length (any shorter, not really going beyond what is only a day trip, any longer and by movie number 3 you've more than had enough)

That all said the real lure for me is the destination. Meeting new and interesting people, seeing things and places which I have never seen before.

That is why I go through 14 hours of cramped Y seating (when a J upgrade was unavailable), because I know that when I get to the other end I'll have experiences which I just can't have at home.

Even after returning home after 14 hours in Y, I can't wait to go do it all again.

For me it is all about the thrill and the excitement of being able to get to exotic places far away relatively quickly.

Personally though I wish most flights were ~5 hours in duration but that is still possible by going to the destination the long way i.e SYD-PER-SIN-BKK.

Looking forward to my trip this week and having the opportunity to be away from Australia for 14 days to recharge the batteries....

I am not sure how many flights I've done, but have earned over 3million air miles, so you can work it out.

To me it's like getting on a bus to go to work or somewhere exotic. Its always anticipatory and rarely eventful at the same time!!

+1 there.

My main problem is the staff carry on with their job, hence negating my efforts to keep my glass a little less full to ensure a lower chance of spillage. It ends up with me being more inebriated than if the cabin was not 'a-rockin' ;)
