Due to end in 2013, I had the privilege to fly on the longest commercial flights in the world. At 15,345km with a scheduled duration of more than 18 hours, SQ22/21 SIN-EWR-SIN are easily the longest commercial flights ever flown.

SQ operates these flights with an A340-500 in an all business class configuration of 100 seats. Both my flights were around half full. Both travelled easterly.

1. Changi transit hotel the night before.
I've stayed at the transit hotel a few times. Some the of rooms have views! This time a SQ A340-600 pulled up outside my room at around 05:30. Although the hotel's soundproofing is pretty good - it doesn't quite cut it if an A340 comes along. How appropriate for me as it might be this actual plane that I'll be flying in a few hours time. :)

2. SQ22 SIN-EWR 10:55-17:50
After breakfast in the SilverKris lounge it was off to the gate at around 10:00. By the time I arrived boarding had just started. There were probably around 50 passengers on this flight, so boarding was very relaxed and uncrowded.

My first impressions of the SQ A340-500 was that it had seen better days - it looked rather yellowed. And also that the pitch on the SQ J-class seats was much tighter than the Qantas Skybeds that I'm more used to. But the SQ seats were a lot wider and you needed the side cushion to stop yourself from sliding sideways. Later I realised it was just SQ's colour scheme - browns, creams, blacks that gave the plane a bit of an aged look and the seats were actually very roomy once you realised that diagonal positioning was needed. Seating is 1-2-1 which means everyone gets an aisle so there is no stepping over other passengers to negotiate.

Departure was on time but it was a very long taxi. I cursed myself for drinking too much coffee in the lounge and for having a pre-take-off champagne without a pre-take-off visit to the bathroom.

I regret this in about 45 minutes time :)

I had wondered, even panicked, about how I'd survive a nearly 19 hour non-stop flight. But in the end it was really nice and quite relaxing. Meals, drinks and service were all SQ top notch. SQ infamously does not hand out pyjamas in J-class, not even on even these flights - so I did a BYO with a Qantas J-class pair that I hadn't opened. I got a few strange looks from the SQ crew probably due to the big kangaroo logo on my chest - but what the heck - I was comfortable for the next 18 hours. :)

1 hour down, only 18:15 hours and 15,068 km to go!!

Time passed pretty quickly with meals (including book-the-cooks), drinks, movies, TV shows and of course sleep! :)

Arrival in EWR was pretty much on schedule and (for a change for me) there was no waiting at all at migration and customs. I had carry-on only so within minutes of arrival I was on a train to central Manhattan (via the EWR Airtrain).

3. New York.
Here is some of what I did in New York. I added two more ticks after the photo was taken. :)

What I've been to see (not just in NYC)

4. SQ21 EWR-SIN 23:00-05:40+2

Now for the trip back to SIN. It's a late night departure but I knew check-in opened at around 18:30 for SQ's only flight of the day from EWR.

IMG_1788s.jpg

I arrived by train from Manhattan at around 17:00 wondering if I could at least get a BP (on-line check-in was not available for me) so I could get lounge access and possibly have a shower in UA's Red Carpet Club lounge before the very long flight (and after a NYC summer day). I knew the SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) lounge that SQ uses didn't have showers and that you need a BP to get airside at EWR. But there were no signs of an open SQ counter and I was told by airport staff to come back at 18:30. So off I went for an early dinner and a beer at one of the airport landside restaurant/bars. I thought I was ordering a lighter option - a chicken BLT sandwich - until it arrived! I had forgotten where I was! :)

Very unhealthy but very NYC :)

At 18:30 I got my SQ21 BP and then headed off to the UA lounge, which was airside in another terminal. Security wondered why I was going airside with a BP for another terminal but they let me through anyway. The UA RCC staff were not so accommodating. Despite it being clearly shown on the Star Alliance website they were not going to accept a J-class BP from SQ as admission. I even showed them the webpage but they said "sorry, it's not what our own system says - J-class is not enough - you need to be Star Gold". They were however amazed that security had let me through. A man entering the lounge at the same time overheard the discussions and kindly offered to guest me in - he agreed with what I had been saying. The dragons relented and I did get my shower and left the RCC straight after. I said goodbye and sorry for the fuss to the dragons - they were actually pretty nice! They said they had heard that SQ put on a "excellent" buffet in the SAS lounge at about 21:30. I suppose, compared with the megre offerings I saw in the RCC, a buffet would sound very impressive! :)

Back I went to the terminal that SQ uses and to the SAS lounge. The RCC dragons were right: anyone who happened to be in the SAS lounge at 21:30 were welcome to the buffet courtesy of SQ. It wasn't great by SilverKris standards but a lot better than what UA or even SAS were offering!

The SAS Business Lounge food offerings haha.

SQ to the rescue!!

Boarding was called and again there were not so many passengers which made boarding very easy and quick. The take-off view of Manhattan on a clear night was stunning!

The flight back to SIN was equally relaxing after I moved seats to escape the annoying passenger behind me who liked to put is feet on the top of my seat back! Goodness! And that, I suppose, is one disadvantage of the tight-ish seat pitch. I asked the crew if I could move - there were heaps of empty seats - so not a problem. The crew also offered to have a word to the guy seated behind me but I said why make a fuss, I can just move.

This was a bit quicker than the outbound.

Time passed pretty quickly again with more meals, drinks, movies, TV shows and of course sleep.

Landing so early at SIN (ca 04:30) was interesting. I have never seen Changi so quiet - with many counters, shops etc closed and almost empty concourses. I went to the SilverKris lounge to have a shower. There must have been fewer than 6 people in the whole lounge!

5. Summary.
I really enjoyed SQ22/21. The comfort of it all and how time seemed to pass quickly for such a long journey. I didn't take many photos of inside the plane. It's SQ's wide business class sleeper seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. For most of the flight duration it was window shades down with the cabin darkened. Meals, drinks and snacks were all good eg Dim Sum was offered as an on-demand snack, EWR-SIN. And you could repeat it later if you wished. With only 50 or so passengers on board and spread throughout the whole plane, it was also a quiet atmosphere. Crew would arrive within seconds of hitting the call button and would ask as they passed your seat, if they saw that you were awake, if there was anything you'd like. All very nicely done, SQ!

Do you really need tongs to pick up a banana?

Thanks. I enjoyed it.

oooo you saw Rent!! One of my fav shows ever...how was the cast in it?

Great TR.

Why the aversion to pj's by SQ?

Cost/weight I guess. But free flow of champagne/other beverages makes up for it. Very generous with refills.

Austman, great trip report. I did SQ 22/21 probably for the last time over New Years, thanks to a little mistake in the Silkair Myanmar website last June.;) Very much enjoyed the trip again. Outbound there were only 23 pax on board, (although judging by the number of containers being loaded, a fair bit of freight), an almost surreal experience.

I need to get out more....only seen two of those & they were movies!

Nice TR.

How long in NYC?

I was just 5 nights in NYC including a Sunday and a Monday night which are quiet days/nights for Broadway.

The photo of what shows I've seen is coughulative not only for this trip... But I did see Rent in the USA.

What I did see over the 4 days and nights (remembering I landed at 17:50 - so too late to see something on the first night) was:

Friday: Ghost. I went to the second last performance for this run on Broadway. Ghost - Broadway Tickets | Broadway | Broadway.com I suspect it will come to Australia.
Saturday: Evita - with Ricky Martin playing Che! (and I cleverly avoided a performance with Elena Roger as Evita) EVITA - Official Broadway Site
Saturday: Nice Work If You Can Get It - with Matthew Broderick Official Site NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT Broadway
Sunday: End of the Rainbow. I went to the final performance for this run on Broadway. End of the Rainbow - Official Website
Sunday: Silence! The Musical. Silence! The Musical - The NYC Off-Broadway Comedy Hit! Heaven help us all if this ever comes to Australia!! Absolutely outrageous!
Monday: Peter and the Starcatcher. Official Site for PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Broadway

The #1 show at the time was The Book of Mormon The Book of Mormon on Broadway | Official Website but that needed about $500 to get a ticket at short notice.

I'd be interested in the crewing for these flights. Does SQ have one cabin crew for the flight or do they carry a second one that takes over halfway? And how long wold the cabin crew layover for in NYC before returning?

What a wonderful trip, thank you for sharing. It is always good to read about how others see various trips and flights.

I also saw Ghost and Nice work if you can get it, on Broadway in April 12 when I was in NYC . I went to the half price ticket place in Times Square and got them very cheaply. One benefit of travelling alone was that I got great seats.

I believe it's like this (not 100% certain): There is one cabin crew and 2 flight crews. You see the same crew when entering and leaving the aircraft. During the flight there is plenty of time for the cabin crew to take even long breaks. Between meals it's lights out and a quiet atmosphere for very many hours. There are separate crew rest areas on the A340-500. Crew stay 3 nights in NYC including the night of arrival. So that means if the flight departed SIN on Monday morning, the crew return on Saturday early in the morning (05:40 was the schedule for my flight).

Nice and concise TR. I have enough Sq pts to do this trip as an award but it would be a bit of a waste as I don't have any need / plans to go to NY:(

+1 to this, it's normal for CC to work up to 20 hours in total so I'm sure they have longer breaks to compensate and additional people to cover

I am so envious Austman- just so green with envy. I have wanted to do this flight since inception - and I think I will miss out. Got plenty pts but not the time this year.

I LOVE flying SQ to states - people kept telling me I was mad when I would do MEL-SIN-NRT-LAX - made perfect sense to me.

Just so badly want to do MEL-SIN-EWR - hmmmm............Sat is quiet in my office - will make morrow planning day.

Thanks so much Austman for driving me down this path.

Really cool trip report, thanks for the write up.
I've also been intrigued to take this flight, there's something about:

1. The longest flight in the world
2. SQ business

A match made in heaven!

Pity we can't use DM's with such a low seat occupancy. Wish SQ would relent. It would Perth NYC perfect
