I recently spent 10 days at the Hughenden Hotel Woollahra.

From the hotel website- www.thehugenden.com.au

"The award winning Hugenden is a gracious historic hotel "

I was in Sydney for family reasons and the hotel is only a 5 minute walk to where I needed to be.
It was my second stay, I did not enjoy the place the first time 18 months ago and things have not improved. Location is the only thing this place has going for it. I stayed in two rooms, the first a "cosy" room - it has a double bed, a chair, a small "wardrobe" - you can only hang a shirt or a skirt, an old portable TV with fuzzy reception. The furniture is just old and tired, not antique. Shabby not chic. The room needed a really good clean. The shower in the bathroom runs boiling hot and icy cold alternately every couple of minutes ! Drron arrived for the weekend and we moved to a "queen" room. This room also needed a good clean. There was 12" from the bed to the wall on either side! My bedside light did not work. There was however a newish plasma TV on the wall, but to get out of bed and into the bathroom you need to push the TV flat against the wall !! We did not have breakfast so our room rate was $ 168 pn for the queen room. We did have dinner in the restaurant one night, and it was OK.

Unless you like the feel of staying in Faulty Towers  ( or your great aunts attic bedroom) I would suggest somewhere else !

'boutique'?!............ i'll let mr & mrs jones.com be the judge of that!

Mr and Mrs Smith perhaps? ;)

Used the Hughenden for a bit while commuting and I found that location worked against it. Certainly while I was there, their restaurant was closed and you'd need to walk a fair distance into Paddington to get a feed.

Otherwise, agree with your comments about the amenities - the beds and sheets are usually pretty good, as is the service, but everything else could do with a refurbish, especially the bathrooms. Boutique is an unfortunate adjective, cuts several ways.

By the way, nice to hear from you mrsdrron!

Thank you djfuzz :D

The restaurant had just re- opened with a new 'chef' supposedly from "Bills". But I ate there twice during the 10 days, once with Drron, and lets just say they certainly were having teething problems. Not all the new chefs fault. On the Saturday night I took Ron, I had booked at 7am for a table for 2 at 7.30pm. We arrived back at the Hughenden at 7.10 pm, to a note in the room that the restaurant was fully booked and they could not seat us !!!!!!!! My blood boiled. I was tired, it was raining. I did not feel like trying to find a restaurant with an empty table at 7.30pm on a Saturday night !! Why didnt they ring me on my mobile during the day ???? I went down to the front desk, note in hand, smoke pouring out my ears :D looked at the restaurant on my way, 2 tables of 2 in there ! Funny they said they had a cancellation and could seat us now ! Also they took walkins while we were there. Just another nail in the coffin.

lol of course, that'll teach me to post while trying to make award bookings with US Airways

I've been staying at the Arts hotel closer to the city on Oxford St. So far it has been pretty good but I've only stayed in about 5 different rooms.

I'm tempted to try fawlty towers and pretend to be German ;)

I thought the flowers that greeted us in the second room said it all-

Golly Gosh...That photo drron has given me the best laugh for the day...
Hope you can supply some more humorous photography :)

I appreciate the feedback and this is what the site is all about, learning from the experiences of others, rather than repeating them yourself.

Its the cut and thrust of business, but deception (ala the dinner reservation) leaves me prepared to make the point in the way it has!!!

Budget Rent a Car did it once, only once to me.

Cheers

Spruce ;)
