Re: The totally off-topic thread

To all those trashing TA you should be as generous as Bill Shorten. His tribute to Tony Abbott today in Parliament-
I also wish to record that he had this frustrating ability on occasion, just when you were really frustrated with a particular decision he might have made, to do something unexpected and generous and personal. From the time when my mother passed, he was very sensitive to that....
I just say to Mr Abbott I had the privilege on several occasions of being with you when we would address serving men and women of our Defence Forces.
And what I thought was remarkably humble of the Member for Warringah, is he would frequently introduce his remarks to them and say: “I have never served” and he was conscious, I think of this, even disproportionately.
What I say to Mr Abbott is you have served.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Turnbull the Millionaire ...
So? At least it means he's not in it for the few million in PM entitlements and has made a career before getting on the parliamentary gravy train.

( Not that I support the man, MT, whom I don't.)

Yes, just like Abbott and cohorts were to Julia Gillard when her father died.

Odd that people seriously think this is an insult! Aside from the fact millionaires are a dime a dozen these days are we really saying a self-made man is worse than those who have been political hacks all their life. Just sounds like envy to me, reflects more on the person saying it than Malcolm Turnbull.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Yes, just like Abbott and cohorts were to Julia Gillard when her father died.

This is what Tony Abbott said when JG's father died-
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott also extended his sincere sympathies to the Gillard family.

"The thoughts of all Australians will be with the Prime Minister, Mrs Moira Gillard and their family at this difficult time," he said.

Really nasty wasn't he.But then everyone believes he really said what Alan jones actually said.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

@drron ... TA did refer days later to the Gillard government "dying of shame" with Jones' comments recently in the headlines. The level of political discourse was definitely lowered during this time. It is therefore not surprising that Abbot's government, promising "adults in charge" has been scrutinised closely and found wanting with regard to maturity, professionalism and adherence to community standards.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

And he apologised for that.

The impression of Abbot's TURC has been that it is specifically targeting ex-PMs and current LOTOs from the Labor side. I agree that corruption in unions is serious and real, but why not establish a federal ICAC to deal with electoral funding, corruption, lobbyists, bribes and kickbacks, rather than selectively targeting one's political opponents?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

History will lament at the lost opportunity in Australia from 2009 when Abbott, Minchen and co and the right wing religious anti-science anti-evidence based policy idiots staged their coup on the country to put the negativism of the Abbott years in place and begin their revisionist campaign to stop Australia becoming progressive forward thinking nation. With the baggage of the LIB/NAT/LNP I don't think MT can reverse that but maybe now at least we can get some progressive sanity into politics in Australia. But I fear this is not possible in the next 10 years...

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Better not to make the reference at all, than have to apologise later. And although TA didn't pen the jokes, there was the Mal Brough fundraiser.
menu.Liberal National Party candidate Mal Brough apologises for 'offensive and sexist' menu which mocked Julia Gillard's body - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Someone explain to me why Mal Brough pilloried by the federal court in his deliberate apparently illegal actions against the speaker of the federal parliament did not face criminal charges but ended up back in parliament?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I think we need a federal ICAC and serious reform of donation laws. Proportional representation would also be welcome but is even less likely. If MT can muster the courage to put forward a serious economic reform package, I might even consider voting Lib for the first time (not holding my breath).

Hard to shed too many tears for Slipper, TMA, but you are right, on that occasion he was the victim of some nasty scheming. I would suggest Brough was tasked with coordination of the campaign as he was outside the Parliament and therefore not subject to direct scrutiny.

Tony Abbot's legacy:
- abolition of progressive taxation of mining and pollution
- strict control of maritime borders
- shortest term in office since Harold Holt's disappearance

Malcolm Turnbull, I hope you've had your Weetbix.

But If TA hadn't got rid of the mining tax it would now be costing us money with the major fall in iron ore and coal prices. It was a botched tax and was never going to raise the money it was predicted to do.

Yet some now want the regressive GST risen to 15 percent despite reform on Super and Negative gearing being in the too hard basket.

I think we need a15% GST anyway - while it is a little regressive, the rich do spend more and it also captures those who are otherwise avoiding -- we do need to reform other taxes

On Super you do run into issues of double taxing but would have no issues with a higher bracket/surcharge for high super income earners

The vilification and betrayal of Tony Abbott is a national disgrace which shows how diseased and amoral the political process has become. A learned Rhodes Scholar tirelessly committee to his community and who unfailingly showed loyalty, compassion and respect to his colleagues has been treated in the most despicable way.

Thank God I cease being an Australian taxpayer this year.

Surely you meant to say "Thank Malcolm ...."?

[I think I'll miss you more than I miss Tiny NobutNobutNo]
