Going to book a J domestic flight on Thai and there's an assortment of aircraft to choose from.

A320/321 is out, they're boring.

B747 surely by far the best option, no doubt an older config but most comfy.

A300 since I'm 'young' I haven't seen one of these. I know it's going to be decrepit and that's drawing me to it...

(When there's a 6 year old thread discussing how old they are, you know it means trouble.)

So what would you choose? Any insight appreciated.

Heck take the flight that gets you the most points.

Everything else being equal go on the plane you've never been on before. Always good to have a new experience.

IT's a one hour flight, anything but the A320 as thats just economy with middle seat block.

The 747 could be ANY config on domestic , newest, less new, or old.

The A300 seats are quite ordinary, but if you want to add it to your list of aircraft then go for it.

Good grief...are they still flying those things. I flew on one of those coughet-Bangkok seems like 20 years ago! Main memory of the flight was how noisy they were!

I assume they haven't changed in 20 years either! For all accounts business class is rubbish, 38" pitch and only 18" wide. Feels like a waste of money compared to the 747. Maybe a do it once but never again thing. Decisions, decisions..

Which one doesn't go direct take that one.

I'll probably be a wuss and end up on the 747 ;)

I'm already going indirect - heading to HKG. Was contemplating CNX-MFM direct on Air Asia, then remembered it was Air Asia. Trying to work a difficult fare out of BKK: KQ (Kenya) codeshare on Vietnam J then CX J with A330/340 coffins. If that fails then RJ J to save money or EK F (A380) for the hell of it :D

if anyone cared to check many of Thais a300 aircraft were built as late as 1998.

yesterday I flew on a 1991 build Qantas 767....

So? Some of the Thai A300's are from the 1980's, and Qantas 767s have a buld from as recent as 2000.

I'd argue that they are both old fleets, and anyone with a bit of nous would know that cherry picking examples from either extreme is not an appropriate way to compare fleet ages.

I'm simply saying it's not unusual for airlines to be running around aircraft that are 20-25 years old. the Thai a300 are fine on domestic hops. I've flown on them at least 30 times and always enjoyed it. you have little choice on some routes like HDY which are mostly still a300 domains.

TG use all sorts of weird and wonderful aircraft and configs for their domestic routes - I had a 747 for Krabi to BKK.

Ive heard one has a galley down the side so there is a long windowless wall to sit next to!

Take the 747 and get out to the airport early and see if you can snag a seat in the First class cabin.

From BKK to HKG there is also UL which has some very cheap business class fares atm (like USD260 odd). Their service is better than RJ and if you can snag a 332 then you'll get a full flat bed. EK is good if you want the shower but expensive!
