Absolutely worth it, and make sure you see Taroko National Park, it is magnificent.

The people don't speak much English but are friendly and the transit system is easy to use.

Oh and it is a great place to do a status run from, CX J TPE-HKG-MNL return for about $500 and reaps 200 SCs, you might even find a better run.

Agree, the national palace museum is a day in itself, and the ShiLin night markets are good as well, if your into food try the local stalls where you can. Currently the status runs are expensive, hopefully with the new website in a few hours the cheapest ones come back.

I read today in a newspaper article that visitors get free wifi all over by registering at the airport upon arrival.

Hope I'm not too late to add my comments. Taipei is an amazing city, and Taiwan in general an unbelievable country. 3-4 days would be enough if you just want to see Taipei and surrounds. In addition to the recommendations above, here are a few more:
Beitou hot springs - Just a short bus/train/cab from the city, there are many hot springs nestled into the mountains. Probably not good for the height of summer, but amazing in the cooler months.
Danshui (Tamsui) - Tourist area near the very northern tip of Taipei, some good market streets with stalls selling food and souvinirs, also good views of the seaside from here.
Maokong Gondola - Take the MRT out to Taipei Zoo, then take the cable car (gondola) up into the mountains for amazing views of Taipei and surrounds. There are also numerous tea houses up there where you can enjoy some of Taiwan's best tea and take in the view (cable car closed Mondays from memory).

With regards to the English level, you will probably not have too much trouble in Taipei city, and the locals will always go out of their way to help you whenever they can. You're never usually far away from someone with a conversational grasp of English.

hope this all helps.

English is not a strong point of taxi drivers, so make sure you get your destination written in Chinese so you get to where you need to go (ditto the name of your accommodation, for your return trip)

Reading a few of these ideas and looking for a way to spend about 6-8 hours whilst returning from GUM (arr 0805) - HKG (dep 1810) in late Sept. Would appreciate any tips on getting out to have a look around - never been before, transport and where to go; will luggage be checked through; a BR J, lounge; cash. Any thoughts (on this first day of rain for months).
