Does anyone actually use the tag system though? If I’m looking for something I don’t usually head to the tag cloud, instead I just search for keywords in the post/thread.

straitman, when you post a new thread you can include some tags, like Qantas, collision, drama, BS ;) with the thread/post so it’s easier to find when you go to the discussion page and click on a word in the "tag cloud". As an example, at the bottom of this thread you can add 2 words per member, I added 'tag' and 'cloud'.

So it would seem to make sense to put a link to "View Tag Cloud" next to the tag box so that you could tag a thread appropriately.

Maybe no one uses tags because they don't know what they are or what tags would be appropriate?

I think most people don't use tags when creating new topics.

I'd be more commenting on the Twitter feed when a new topic is created, where every tweet is tagged #qantas and #virginblue even if the topic is on neither.

I think it’s one of those features that sounded good, but hasn’t taken off, and if you can keyword search reasonably well, and considering a huge amount of posts here are on the same subject, the tags get sort of useless, as clicking on Qantas might dump a lot of threads ;)

A 'Tag Cloud'? I have no idea what you guys are discussing.

I can see why things have been kept simple on AFF....

You can tag threads with keywords to make them easier to find, each member can add 2 tags to each thread. It sounds good on paper, and works well for blogs, but not so much here.

Simple is good.

When introducing any new features one needs to be wary that they do not alienate existing users. Nokia N97 mini is sitting at home in SYD as it is too difficult to use to make simple phone calls....

I thought about adding tags even did it once. I listed 5 words (as allowed when creating a thread iirc) separated by commas but it wouldn't accept them. For me the problem is knowing what is appropriate.

Also if you look at the current tag cloud Qantas is about size 60 font and everything else is about size 3.

Johnk a tag cloud is a simple concept it is just a box with words in varying sizes depending on many times they are used. No need to be alienated by it as it has been there a while and no one seems to have noticed. ;)

I have used it a few times too… and do realise what is most often discussed here :p

As I'm sure most people do. Just saying it makes the tag cloud a bit pointless (besides not knowing what to tag) unless you are looking for something about qantas, I guess.

Actually if people used tags would the qantas get smaller. :p

Well, if the tags were used properly, Qantas might still be big, but you’d look for "J, F, Y, Y+, catering, accident, 747, A380" etc… things that were a little more relevant than the whole airline :p

I clicked on virgin Blue and only 3 threads were still open, and there was one blog, yours :D
