Tablets as cameras

RE Enormous tablets. I still like my phone to fit in my pocket and not have to carry a man bag or coat - and keep the tablet for sitting down. This discussion reminds me of this commercial for Lumia 920: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJZ7099aafw

I have a Lumia 920, and love the Camera on it to bits for what it is, but when circumstances allow, take my Fujitsu near-SLR (3/4 lens, apparently, but behaves like an SLR) for Kakadu, Darwin Sunsets, etc. However, due it is bulk, it usually stays at home except for explicit photographic excursions where I know I can handle a camera and two kids.

In general I don't mind it, seems a bit unusual but if that's what makes them happy then good on them.

The only time I would have a problem with it is in crowds when the person is holding up the tablet is blocking the view for others behind them.

Yeah agree!! At concerts, sports etc (where you cant move away) all the mobile phones are bad enough but then some moron holds up an ipad with the flap down and totally blocks your view.
Apart from the rudeness of it they just look stupid IMHO.

Just spend 3 weeks in Europe, had a camera, samsung phone and mini ipad.. My phone takes pretty good pics and I used that in the end mostly, sitting on trains / planes I used my IPad. Next time I travel doubt I will even take my camera. I found these all took good pics, don't plan to print only upload.

I think in crowded places they are just a pain as they take up so much "photo space" and besides, I think they look just silly. Just me.

I have seen people doing it at conferences to get pics of the presentation.

For business trips I go HLO and don't need to take a camera so I just use the iPhone. If not going HLO and if planning to go diving we now have five usable cameras that we take:

- Two iPhone 4S - great for quick snaps
- uTough underwater camera - great for pics in/around the pool and beach (I have a great shot of boygr diving into the pool at me that is just perfect
- GoPro - for diving - mostly for videos
- Nikon D3200 DSLR - the new addition to the family that is used whenever I want a decent picture - the lighting is so much better than the iPhone or uTough. boygr also likes this camera so constantly grabs it from me and he has taken some great shots - he is only 4.

I also use the tablet for taking pre and post rental car hire shots, since it geo tags the images which came in handy once.

If I didn't do this I would have been caught out big time by Hertz in SEA four years ago.
Handed back car, received bill for damage from Hertz a month or two later, emailed photos to them, no further action.
Take photos of everything now on a rental, but was only on advice from this forum that I started doing it.

haha - Gold! jp junior (6) does the same, started with my Canon 60D when he was 4 and did quite well. Now he owns the 50mm lens, and has taken some decent shots. Struggles with the big lenses and the grip but getting there.

That's a great idea which I'll most certainly use the next time I rent a car...

I use my iPhone 5 for photos. I only take holiday happy snaps and things to put on Facebook but I've been pretty impressed with some of the photos it has produced. As far as the iPad goes, I feel really unco when I try to use it to take photos. For some reason I can't get it in the right spot. Plus I don't carry it around all the time like I do my iPhone.

People are using the tablets for more than a camera, and if your doing trip reports its a lot easier to upload from a tablet than a SD card if your only travelling with a tablet.

I think the majority of people we see using tablets to take their photos are very unlikely to be doing TR's! :D

My guess is that it easy to e mail the photo's out or put them onto FB or what every social media they want to use.

IM no photography buff, but there's no way I'd rely on my ipad camera, quality is $#!T so much so I'm wondering if there's something wrong with it
