I am booked KTA-PER return next week. At T-80 for my first leg it did not give me the option of Row 4...but it opened up 4C for me at T-72.
On my return leg, it is now T-63 and nothing in Row 4 has opened as yet.

On Expert Flyer, it is showing seats in rows 4,5,6 as blocked apart from occupied seats 4C, 6 A,D & F. It is showing seat 5A as available and that seat is available to me in seat selection for the flight on the Qantas site as well.

On my first flight, a similar amount of seats were showing as blocked in those rows. At T-72 only 4C suddenly came up as available to me. I picked that and Expert Flyer showed that as an occupied and not blocked seat when I went back to that site.

On several other flights on this route, I have had row 4 available to me on about 90% of the time. I just cannot work out any formula, so was wondering if anyone could enlighten me.

For info I was gold for all the other flights...will qualify for platinum on my flight down to Perth this week, so will be platinum for my return flight.

My guess is that PCV is relative and unless you know the details of the other pax on the flight and where you rank in relation to everyone else (ie you probably never will), then you won't know why some seats are available or unavailable to you. There may not necessarily be a fixed formula, or a formula in general.

There could be other influencing factors, eg current and historical route information.

Unless someone with inside knowledge would be willing to reveal it here, I think it's safe to say that information is unknown and most likely will stay that way. It could be considered commercially sensitive for all we know.

Then again, this is just speculation and I doubt that kind of information would be freely available on the internet.

Perhaps your PCV is low.

Sometimes only one side of row 4 opens up for me on SYD-BNE flights. Sometimes I canot get into row 4 and need to keep checking closer to flight.

T-80 is not a published benefit. Perhaps on some flights it remains blocked until OLCI.

Well can't work it out...at T-36 it offered me 4A which I took even though prefer C or D. Expert Flyer updated straight away, showed my move me from the exit row13D to 4A, but still showing all of 4DEF as blocked. Has opened up row 5ABC rather than just 5A before. Guess we will never know the vagaries of Qantas' seat allocation system. :)

I consistently find that ex PER going east, at least, that T-80 comes and passes with no opening up of row 1. It's usually closer to T-24 before there's any action.

It never seems that bad coming to PER from the east.

Well at T-22 my points for that day's flight posted and upgraded me to platinum. Then I was able to choose 4 C or D. Chose 4C as the appeared to be a shadow that side whilst the other side had 2 people in E & F. Was proved to be right when boarded, had a plat in 4A plus a shadow our side...the other side all occupied. But, still no wiser how it works, will just keep testing the waters because I really like Row 4:) Thanks for the input guys:)

As always good info from this site....and soon, as well as being platinum, I will have a 100 posts here and move up from Junior member!! Ah the status just keeps going up!! lolololo

Made a booking at 4pm Friday for a 6pm Monday flight, so at around T-74.

Was able to select 4A on a 738. 4B&C were shown as taken.

On board appeared up be a P1 in 4C with 4B his shadow (based on CSM greeting and conversation prior yo landing).

Mentioned to me on taking his seat that he hoped "we" got a shadow. Didn't want to disappoint him that I was only SG, so the shadow was really his.
