Esteemed and awesomely knowledgeable AFF colleagues!

Next year Mr Lat34 and I have two weeks Caribbean sailing from Antigua to St Martin (19 Feb to 6 Mar). Mr Lat34 has decided he *probably* wants to go skiing in Colarado beforehand, say one week. AFTER sailing we will most likely spend a pre-organised week in Cuba then maybe a week in Mexico from Cancun? Tulum? (although this is less likely) before heading to Dallas for the A380 direct to Sydney. Neither have been to Dallas, Miami or Mexico although both have been to Puerto Rico. Total time away perhaps six weeks.

I have around 100k QFF and 900,000 Altitude points (12k reserved so 1:1 transfer to eg MH Enrich otherwise 2:1) while Mr Lat34 has ~70k QFF and 153,000 Altitude (20k reserved). Both are NB. Have just joined AA but unable to purchase points as under one month membership.

Looking for creative ways to effectively use points for J travel plus any routing suggestions. Qantas J on sale to the USA is $4,514.

Is it worthwhile securing sale J SYD-LAX / DFW-SYD using $$$ then use points for J connecting flights? I have a back problem -- sitting for 14+ hours in Y is not feasible -- longhaul A380 lying flat and / or sipping champers is fine :)

Look forward to reading your suggestions.
