I'm travelling from MEL to SYD on QF450 and then on CI052 to Taipei. As the 2 airlines are not partners, I will have to collect my luggage in Sydney domestic, travel across to the international terminal, check in to China Airlines, collect boarding pass and go through security/immigration. According to the Qantas website, I'm allowed to use their transfer bus as I've just travelled on their domestic flight. However their transfer bus is on airside, does that mean I've to go through the domestic security check in Sydney in order to use that service? I've plenty of time between the 2 flights. Will I be allowed to go through the domestic security check without a boarding pass? Is it better to pay and get the train instead?

You should plan to use the train, IIRC full size bags wont be permitted airside.
