Sydney Airport to CBD $60 Flat Rate Taxi Fares

A $60 flat rate will now apply to any taxi trip from Sydney Airport to the CBD in a bid to crack down on fare price gouging.

From November 3, Sydney will join the likes of major cities including Paris and New York as it begins a 12-month trial of a flat fare structure.

Looks like some action for SYD

Right now, a Didi from Sydney International to Hilton (near Town Hall) is $45 for comparison.

An UberX is $53.

Wow that's expensive! And I thought $60 cap for SYD to CBD was a rip-off.....

From the airport roughly $3.60 flag fall, $4.10 airport fee, $10.10 ED - so $18 before you move.

And then it's $2.20/km (CBD 13-15km) and say a few $s in waiting time as you will catch some lights.

I live 11km from SYD and an uber is typically $28 and 12mins, so 12-13km to city shouldn't exceed $35 in a ride share unless a surge is in play.

I still think $60 is excessive for a 15min ride, but yymv.

What is $10.10 ED?
No wonder the train gate fee is excessive as they clearly know that they can charge that much due to the higher cost of taxis.

Now is there a loophole for the drivers to exploit it though? They prey on vulnerable and those on corporate accounts I note.

We had some employees in Sydney the other month, company had a small bus to pickup people as it was a group, but due to late flights half got told to take a taxi. All got slugged $70-$90 for the ride.

Ive seen 50-60 on uber a fair bit at night.

But part of it is routing. There's often no need to take the toll roads to save 5mins but it's what brings it up as the default routes.

Also i had a legit meter run $103 for airport to Darling Harbour at midnight last year. QF was paying so I didn't really say much but I was pretty surprised.

Thag being said the cheapest Didi i got was $17 from town hall to airport. Needless to say being cheaper than the train i took it, but u suspect that was a voucher and some silly cheap discount pricing a few years back.

The flat rate doesn’t include:

• the airport surcharges
• tolls
• credit card surcharges
• weekend and late night surcharges
• use of the boot (for bags or luggage)
• your journey is not to the CBD, so regular fares will apply
• doesn’t apply to taxis you order in advance
• doesn’t apply to our taxi company, only ‘airport taxis’
• only applies for one passenger, more than one attracts regular fares
• my payment machine isn’t working, pay me cash (including all the extras listed above)

And the list will go on…

It's been like that for years (if not a decade) already in SYD and MEL. I don't recommend the taxi to anyone now unless its absolutely desperate. Uber/didi is just consistently cheaper.

That one is fair enough. All of the flat rate airport taxis I’ve used around the world had a limited geographic area.

Most of the rest of your list is just ridiculous, but I assume it’s in jest.

In jest… only partly. Most of the scenarios are based on real life experience of some pretty dodgy taxi drivers operating out of Sydney airport. Others are tried and tested scams operating in other major cities.

Ridiculous is the right word, but plenty drivers seem to be able to make them up.

If a tourist reported a taxi driver told them ‘Circular Quay is not the CBD’ so regular fares apply, I wouldn’t be surprised.

O’Riordan street is 11kms (7-8 from domestic)

M8 is 13 kms

M1 is 19-20kms
