My favourite daughter asked me about this, but I'm making no progress. VA 'should' have VA + HA SYD - HNL - SMF, but it doesn't come up. Any suggestions plse on the route SYD-HNL-SMF?

She just wants SYD-SMF in the quickest was possible.

For HA bookings/ routes you will need to call

I don't think DL fly there,

Assume looking for points/ reward bookings.

Thanks, can it be booked on one ticket VA - HA? Do we call VA? Will be revenue.

Actually, it appears DL do fly LAX to SMF with VA flight numbers with reasonable connection times.....

VA only codeshare with HA to HNL and i don't think they offer fares to SMF via HNL so it would be an expensive option. The cheapest/ fastest option is via LA with DL/VA

Yes, sadly LAX keeps coming up. Was hoping to go HNL - SMF direct. Will check out VA / DL

VA doesn't fly to HNL. So a ticket SYD-HNL-SMF would be all on HA. Perhaps just book through them.

Calling would tell you for sure, but I kind of doubt that VA have codeshares on the HNL-SMF flight, it's a bit of an unusual routing for a codeshare. Codeshares usually exist for an airline to feed to or from with their own flights. VA don't serve HNL or SMF with their own metal, so the only feed including VA would be a two-stop route from another Oz airport, making it a two-stop itinerary. VA wouldn't have much reason to sell these tickets, makes more sense for them to route through LAX.

Thanks, I’ll make contact w’ HA. Any particular advice on HA?

Is VA a good place to credit HA points earned?

You could do SYD - AKL with (Air)NZ, joining in/putting in SQ KF FF#, which can be transferred to VFF later on, and then look at NZ8 from AKL - SFO, bypassing LAX, from there, can get something close to SMF/direct to SMF, if she wants to bypass LAX.
AKL is a very easy airport to transit.
Hearing the stories of LAX, if I were doing this, I would do the via NZ way, and SFO might be an easier airport to enter the US by.
There is an AirNZ codeshare, NZ9695, not sure if its UA or another airline.
Gives a bit of time to move the legs on the long odyssey to the US.
But wait till the others come in and see what they say.
Edit: Nzd$912 one way, AKL - SFO - SMF with UA 17Nov19.
Nzd$1213 one way, SMF - SFO - AKL with UA 02Dec19.
Both carry the NZ flight number, and both fares are whY, from the (Air)NZ website, it won't allow a straight booking on the website from SYD though.

VA suggests a LAX - SMH (VA-VA) connection of 1: 40 hours. Is that realistic, will they automatically put her on the next flt to SMH is she misses the booked flt?

I would recommend at least 2 hours for anyone with luggage. Lax can be highly variable; 1:40 would be enough in most cases but it's tight.

If she did miss the flight, yes, she would be accommodated on the next available flight with seats available.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
