Looking to purchase a return business class ticket from SYD-JFK in May next year. I'm quite flexible with my dates for May/June.

On the VA website it's coming up with a fare quotation of $8,843.68 and that's with travel in economy between LAX & JFK. No options being offered for business class on the domestic sectors.

Went across to the AMEX travel site and entered the same details and for VA flights in business and business for the domestic sectors, the price quotation came back as $13,993.68.

Is this outrageous pricing or what?

Bit pricey for me, but I'm happy enough in economy to save my dollars.

Out of curiosity I had a quick look at a couple of VA's partners.
Delta: SYD-JFK, J, return, mid-May, ~$8.8k (all business)
Hawaiian: SYD-JFK, J, return, mid-May, ~$6.1k (all business)

The $13k price appeared to be relatively standard for full-flex business.

J class sale ended early this week. Syd > LAX return was just under 6k. So you would have got it a lot cheaper even with the extra domestic leg. I'd hold fire, it's all Europe sales atm and wait until end of year sales. Also Air New Zealand randomly does sales (they had as low as $5.5k Syd > SFO return a month ago ... And just prior $4.5k) so just check on a regular basis the airline websites and the agent ones: webjet, Expedia and Zuji.

My last two JFK trips have ended up being with Delta as they occasionally have around the $6,000 price (not showing at the moment however.) I actually rang Virgin, telling them I would like to book with them, but when I did, the LAX-JFK legs always reverted to Y class. Nothing Virgin could do, so saved the $2,000 and booked and flew with Delta. Qantas did have a companion fare available which did tempt me, came out at $5,500 not sure if it is still available.
