In February this year I managed to pick up a discounted business class fare SYD-JFK for $6079 booked in I class for travel this past July.

I'm needing to do the same itinerary next July and I was wondering if there's a good method for getting alerts for when fares go in sale again.

I have tried setting an alert using Virgin's own flight specials app but a lot of the time you cant get into the app and I'm not too certain if it's that reliable.

Are there other solutions people might be using?

out of curiosity - are you looking to pay cash for the flights and at ~$6k or less? Or would you be happy to buy flights for ~$3.5-$4.5 J class on points ?

But in terms of notifications, google flights or here, secret flying is always a good website to keep an eye on

I'm on the lookout to purchase VA flights under $7,000.

Okay no problems

Well depending on your flexibility and I understand that you just need to get to New York but there are still RTW fares available for <$7k w/ VA and VS. these are available June-Aug 2018 and allow itineraries to New York.

Deals | RoundAbout Travel

Have a look here for example.

EDIT: But again in terms of Alerts for VA - you are probably best off just keeping an eye on relevant websites.. Subscribing to "I know the Pilot" or "Secret Flying". You could perhaps approach Flight Centre and tell them what you're after and they may set an alert up for you.

Do a dummy booking on the Delta site but select VA long haul flights.

We did Syd>LAX>ATL>SCL return all J (VA long haul, Delta domestic & to Santiago) for less than $5Kpp return.

Was that USD?

No, AUD. Just checked the Delta site and a dummy booking gave me prices in $AUD, although its showing $7K for dummy March 2018 dates. I remember at the time thinking it was a crazy price and grabbed them immediately.

I second this, I have run a few dummy bookings through Delta as we plan our speculative US trip for later next year. DL seem to be consistently cheaper across all fare buckets that I have been looking at. The trip I am keeping a closer eye on SYD-LAX-SEA-LAX-SYD with VA Premium Economy on the long haul legs and DL Comfort Plus on the Seattle legs seems to be about 2k cheaper booked through Delta than the same trip in Y booked through VA.

It may require a bit of tweaking to ensure that you definitely get VA for the trans pacific legs (DL try their best to keep you on their own metal) but it's definitely worth keeping in mind.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Does booking through DL (even though on VA metal for SYD-LAX) negate the ability to use VA points to upgrade from PE to J?

Honestly I haven't looked into it, as I'm hoarding points to transfer to Krisflyer for a J return trip to Singapore in the next year or so.

My guess would be no, as it's a Delta booking so if you wanted to upgrade then you'd need to use Delta Miles for it, like any other non VA booking. Essentially you're booking, paying and flying as a DL customer, they are just honouring your VA status.

Qantas have started a (companion) sale, suspect Virgin will follow suit very shortly.
