I thought there was a thread detailing the relative merits of travelling on SQ metal with a VA issued ticket compared to using a SQ issued ticket.

Anyway, not being able to find it, here goes.

Putting the cost of the ticket aside, as a Platinum Member travelling on a VA issued ticket on SQ operated flights from SYD-HKG return via SIN I understand that I would get 100% bonus points whereas if I travel on a regular SQ issued ticket there are no bonus points. Also, status credits are the same on either ticket.

The other advantage with a VA issued ticket is the crediting of eligible flight sectors for status requalification

If I'm not right I'd appreciate being corrected.

Thanks.

That's correct. but...

with VA issued ticket you can not select your seat on SQ...

That's what I've heard but if I'm flying business on an A380 it's probably not a big issue.

Even though you can't do seat selection, is it possible to call SQ directly, quote their booking reference number and ask for seat assignment? I've done this with other partner airlines where I've booked via VA.

SQ seems to be slightly funny in this regard, calling MAY work, my experience wasn't that great but at that time I needed the sectors more than anything so stuck with no seat selection, however, agent at checkin did give me a bulk head seat :)

I had a recent SQ return trip BNE - SIN in J. Booked it as an SQ flight number, did my seat selection, then added my velocity number. I got the 100% bonus points and all the benefits the same as if I booked it as a VA flight. Don't know if this is an aberration but the same thing happened to me on a NZ flight to AKL a few weeks earlier.

hey Meggsy did that include the sectors also. I remember there was some promotion earlier on SQ which gave bonus points when traveling on SQ as a velocity member.

Now that you mention that I think there may have been a promotion on at the time with SQ flights. I'm not sure if the sectors counted as I already had my 8 for the year and once the counter is at 0 it doesn't track any more. That still doesn't explain the same result with the NZ flight. Maybe it was a rare accident in my favour

Interesting, let me try this with SQ and ANZ when I fly next :) fingers crossed...

There was a promo earlier this year, April by memory. I had VA booked flights on SQ metal and received double points plus bonus points for being VA.

I phoned VA to get my SQ booking reference then I phoned SQ and selected seats.

I just flew SYD-HKG as PS and didn't receive my % point bonus because I booked through Singapore. It was a VA codeshare flight so I believe you need to book through the VA site to get any bonuses. Depends on how much you value those points though because I noticed it was about $150 more expensive through VA.

However as a WP, it's probably worth the $150. Hell, I'm a SG now and I'd pay the extra for the points %age.

Also a bit off topic but I highly recommend booking through Singapore if you're doing this route and want to fast track some points on a budget. I flew their Flexi W fare and that counts as full fare economy but it was only about $150 more than the el cheapo economy. Thanks to that, my return flight with the SIN layover netted me 200 points instead of a 100 which is pretty huge for an extra 150 bucks. I tried booking through VA and I could only see Saver fares which were even more expensive than the Singapore flexi.
