Have booked these most years, and get a ton of SC - do the Math as these fly via MEL both ways. And Plats get to use Etihad FC lounge in Abu Dhabi which is very nice.

Sub 5K all in, is DARN low.

Dublin, apart from being a lovely city in a lovely country, means you are a $100 flight from a ton of Europe destinations.

You need to play around with dates a bit, but this one worked without ANY discount codes just now.

Many other dates I saw worked, right out to mid 2020.

Might suit others. :)

I found similar prices to Milan from Hobart for Feb next year using a promo code on the Va website. I was sorely tempted, but in the end I decided I’d rather splash out on many nights in a fancy hotel instead, so I paid $1200 for the cheapest economy return. I’ll still get access the first class lounge in Abu Dhabi, so that’s something. Fingers crossed I don’t get stuck in a middle seat.

This is my usual strategy on all counts.

I have thus far found it impossible to force myself to pay for seat allocation on a premium airline like EY just to get any old seat. Ridiculous.

I paid for SQ seats to and from London a few months back because I need to have an aisle seat (or at least I don’t want to crawl over people in order to stand up). But SQ charge less than EY. Because I always have a code share VA domestic flight attached to my OS trips, I can’t check in online and the SQ wording made me think that I could only choose free seats on check in (maybe I’m wrong?). EY seems to say it’s a free for all at a certain hour so I’ll try my luck then.

Are those fares still around? I can’t see anything sub ~$6.5k during Sep/Oct.

Maye they read AFF?

I started this thread 5 days ago and there were all kinds of options to various Europe around $A5K return. Even tried a few from ADL which were around that level. Another member above saw them from HBA.

Already have flights booked that will requal us as Plat to 2021, but these were very tempting. Lot of points earn too.

Unfortunately, I only noticed the thread today ☹️.

I would have happily gone back to Europe via DUB to keep my VA Plat also....

I managed to get some similar pricing via NRMA and another discount code - which got me excited *however* the MEL-AUH-DUB sectors over and back booked into whY...! SYD-MEL was J.

Not just standard seat selection, but now water, snacks, coffee, drinks outside meal times... all charged for under buy on board scheme. And a tiny main meal served with no sides other than a bread roll.

I've seen HKG-EU in J on EY be half this price, and it's almost as many SC. And you can buy the flights to HK on VA for so cheap, and probably have a row to yourself. Something to consider if a flight to the EU is a status run.

Yes, I’ve started looking at that. Also some sale fares to DPS. I saw a good fare from DPS to LHR - albeit on QR. I will save that for a QF status run!

That is very interesting! Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to be looking for some flights soon and hoping to pick up some extra SC on the way so this might be useful combined with some redemptions...
