Hi it's pretty much as it says in the title,

I'm making my first points redemption on VA for VA/EY flights to Europe and the options have me
SYD-AUH on VA J or EY Y (no EY J)

VA J gets me to AUH at 23:50 with a connecting EY J at 09:30 the following morning
EY Y gets me to AUH at 06:25 for the 09:30 connection

what is less painful 13.5h SYD-AUH in Y or 9.5h in AUH overnight?

Do the J, AUH is an easy overnight with relatively cheap accommodation down the road at Yas if the airport hotel is not to your liking.

zinkle as markis10 has said the airport hotel Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport is very new & is excellent This hotel is connected to the airport terminals and can be reached through internal walkways with a 5 minute walk. It is absolutely perfect if you have a long transit through Abu Dhabi and want some rest plus excellent value $ you can make booking's Thur their web site good luck enjoy

A bad hotel is no where near as bad as 13 hrs in a Y seat anyway. So you really can't lose flying J :)
