If anyone writes a blog do they have a preference for the platform and why eg Wordpress or Google Blogger or something different. I want to be able to add photos from iphone or ipad with little fuss (and preferably not having to reduce their size)

TIA

I use wordpress. But I also started 3 years ago, so things may have changed. I remember at the time it was recommended by one of the big bloggers.

I use Wordpress with my own domain for Miles to the Wild rather than a Wordpress hosted site. I like Cpanel for the back end as opposed to Godaddy's interface. Hostgator has worked fine for me.

If you're hosting your own site and using Wordpress, be prepared to keep everything up to date for security purposes.

Self-hosted Wordpress has a lot going for it. That is, not a blog hosted on Wordpress.com but one hosted on Hostgator or Bluehost or whatever (even your own server, if you have the skills), and set up the way you want it. There are oodles of articles giving step by step guides. This one, for example.

Wordpress is popular, powerful, flexible and easy to use (at least until you install a premium theme and a tonne of plugins). It interfaces well with PHP and CSS programming (though those skills not required), likewise MySQL if you need database functions. However, it runs perfectly fine out of the box.

Uploading and presenting images is easy, even with a basic setup. Fancy-dancy galleries and lightboxes are two a penny. It is easy to put up something really professional-looking; the hard part is having the photographic skills to match!

Social media can be a huge part of blogging and building an audience. Facebook, Flipboard, Pinterest, Twitter, they all add to getting the thing up out of the ruck. Luckily there are any number of Facebook groups that can help.

And many of the regulars here have their own blogs. Here are three that look at travel, based out of Australia, but each takes a different approach:
1. Josie Wanders
2. Our World in Review
3. A Thousand Flights

I use Wordpress on siteground (external host) and Wordpress on my home server. I'd say that's the direction to go.

An excellent example of what can be done with Wordpress straight out of the box. A basic theme supplied by Wordpress, a couple of plugins, good organisation and just fill in the content.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - think Wordpress might win - just got to think of a good blog name now (5 more days at work then serious planning before I go)

Hi - I've decided on Wordpress - a friend kindly set me up on the with my own name but I'm having trouble getting it to look nice - can anyone recommend any good Wordpress sites or ebooks that might help. I'm quite computer literate but it's just taking a bit of time.

Cheers

It's been a while since I set my up, but I recall there are templates you should be able to choose from? Although it may just be with the package that I chose?

I found this article to be helpful

How to Start a Travel Blog

Yep, just look up WordPress templates or "themes". There are some free and some paid. Wodrpress has good documentation about how to add them to your site.

A Little bit late to the party, but I actually use Ghost Blog rather than WordPress as I find it a little lighter and faster. But WordPress is a good solid option with lots of community support.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions - finally working on it and it's starting to come together

Quite topical post for me as I just received advice that travelpod is closing within the month. I need to get everything migrated off and onto something new in the next two weeks before we head to Brasil. For the WordPress users - I am a cheapskate and was going to use the free version but I can't upload video. Do I really need to spend $10 month to do this? I told you, I'm a cheapskate. I'm thinking I just need to stuck it up.....
