Hello,

I'm after suggestions for somewhere to go for a week in November - we have a 2yr old who is super happy building sandcastles and slashing in the shallows all day. For those of you familiar with the lagoon on the esplanade in Cairns - he will happily spend 6 hours a day mucking about on the sand there. Something a bit like that.

  • Ideally we'd like to stay right on the beach / in a resort around an artificial beach/lagoon
  • It would be preferable if it were not a surf beach (artificial lagoon beach or similar would be perfect)
  • We're based in Sydney - so up to a 4hr drive or 2hr flight is probably as far as we want to go
  • I went to the twin waters resort at MCY 20 years ago - something like that maybe?
  • Basically somewhere relaxing, with a safe beach for making sandcastles and splashing in the shallows.
All suggestions would be very welcome.

Kim’s Toowoon Bay is still a hidden gem just north of Sydney. Beachfront, plunge pools, good food, the whole deal. Beach is very sedate and kid friendly

I was going to say Hamilton Island too, that's our domestic go-to

Hastings point. Northern NSW. About 20min south of Coolangatta airport.
Wonderful estuary for kids Close to Pottsville. Cabarita (one lovely river/ beach. Other beach) with places to eat/shop. And close to Bryon. Laid back. Great for kids. There's Big 4. Tweed Coast Holiday Park..or search Stays and Airbnb.

Probably a bit further than you wish to travel, but’ Streaky Bay is pretty amazing.
A nice sheltered bay as you described you are after, and then just a few minutes drive on the other side of the little peninsula amazing surf beaches.

Heron Island, we took our then 3 year old and 1 year old. Something for everyone.

Have you thought about Kiama. Easts beach Holiday Park would be perfect for you. There is a surf beach, but because of the way it sits in the bay the waves are no biger then a couple feet. Actually most times its dead flat. The park itself has all that you would need. Google East beach Kiama and check it out. Also you could do dayvvtrips to Jervis Bay National Park which is pristine. Lots to do and see within 90min drive from Kiama. Also its only 90min from Syd.

If you do give Kiama a look another accomodation option is Kendalls on the Beach, it is pretty close to town and an easy walk. My parents live across the road so we have been to Kiama a few times.

Seems like you've already been to Cairns, but we stayed with our first 2yr old at Peppers Beach Club in Palm Cove. They have a lagoon pool with sand on one side and he basically spent all day doing the same, sand and splashes. There is the beach across the road if you want it. It does require the 30min drive from Cairns airport however.

Other places we've been looking at (many more kids now!) are:

RACV Noosa Resort
BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort

Some very good suggestions there but one from left field.I was reminded by a recent post from VPS how lovely Boat Harbour in Northwest Tassie is.A beautiful beach with waves usualy very small.Perfect for young children.
Both VA and JQ have direct flights SYD-LST that are less than 2 hours.Flights down are mid afternoon.Coming back VA ~ 1030, JQ less child friendly at 8.20pm

You would though have to hire a car at LST.But lots of interesting stuff on the drive to Boat Harbour including the Tasting Trail if you are in to food.
