My wife is going to a course in Cambridge UK in Jan 2014, and now the daughter and I will look to join her. We thought about going through China and having a few days in Beijing, Harbin and Shanghei. We would leave AKL on or around 1 jan 14 and leave LHR Sat 11/1/14. This is where I come unstuck. We looked at CX flights to UK, but they transit HKG, and the regional flights start to add up in price very quickly. BA flies direct to PEK, but I cant seem to get travel agent to be able to get a decent return fare AKL-LHR with this option. We would like to fly one world for points and lounges. we have to be back in AKL Mon 20 Jan

Any tips on CX/ dragonair / BA fares that would let us do this without costing 6k for Y ( Mrs KT is flying J). Or any suggestions of cheap second J ticket with purchase of the first? Or would it be best to get round the world tickets so we can include regional China.
Just to add complications, 19 yr old son doest want to come with us but would like to ski in Japan with me for a bit, so I would need to get from China / HKG to Tokyo around 19 Jan and return to AKL around 25 Jan

Am I just being too ambitious. Any suggestions welcome. I would give this straight to Flight assistance desk, but I feel I am not defined enough.
Thanks all
