Hi everyone and Happy New Year.

I'm due to fly QF to Shanghai in March and need to get a connecting flight onto Beijing. Can anyone suggest a reputable airline that does this run? I know, QF also fly from Sydney to Beijing however I messed up with my geography and need to transit onto Beijing from Shanghai now.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and suggestions

Just pick a cheap Chinese airline to get there. They're all the same and if booking through Webjet/Expedia etc then check out the first class fares, they're often just a little more than the Y fare and give access to the lounge.

I have flown MU and CA and they are just fine. Chinese Airlines seem to cop a fair bit of criticism but give me MU or CA over JetStar any day.

Take the high speed train. 4hours. Now the G trains are active between Shanghai and Beijing, I will never fly the route.

If you do need to fly, MU is good.

Actually that is an even better suggestion. The train will not be affected by ATC delays which are inevitable in China.

Click on eLong or Ctrip and punch in your date and choose whichever flt suits you.

MU / CA / CZ whatever - all are more than acceptable. Qantas arrive T2 don't they - MU dep T2 so rather than changing terminal that might be your best bet if suitable MU connection.

As TH said Chinese carriers get many negative posts but usually from people who have never flown them.

Yes CRH train is a unique experience but it is 5 hours SH to BJ and you are going to need to get from PVG to Shanghai Railway Station or to Hongqiao - and buy a ticket - if it is your first time in China it may be a little daunting. Ask away if you require further help.

Please do report back as to your experience whichever way you choose to go.

Definately considered this however flight arrives into Shanghai at 6.30pm and by the time clear immigration, customs, train it into the City for the high speed train, miss any departures so would need to overnight. The suggestions to fly MU seem doable, with the last flight of the day at 9.00pm. Just hope the arriving flight QF is ontime, and customs, and immigration and check in can be achieved in 2.5 hours.

If QF flt on time you will have plenty time.

Also, G trains to Beijing don't generally leave from the "city".

I believe you can now catch G train from PVG, however, my previous connection has been from Hangqiao Airport, direct line from PVG

I came down to Shanghai from Beijing this afternoon. My advice - if you can, choose a large aircraft that will dock at the gate. The plane I was on (MU) was an Airbus 321 and we had buses to and from the terminal at both ends. It's not fun queueing to get on and off a plane in -10 degrees Beijing weather and only a few more degrees warmer in Shanghai.

I've done the SYD-PVG and on to PEK route via QF and MU in the past but I swear never to do it again. The trouble is that if there is a slight delay in the QF or MU flights then you end up getting in PEK extremely late. Given I fly from Adelaide this can turn into the hell of being awake for 24 hours. My principle now is to break the journey with an overnight stay in HK or Shanghai. It may take longer but I reason that travelling from SYD to PEK on the one day leaves you arriving so late you pretty much need a day to recover anyway.

Just another issue, how is one suppose to book a ticket? I tried MU's website and it needs a China mobile phone number. I tried e-long and it says I need to collect the tickets at a local office in China. I tried a QFF partner award redemption and the following message comes up.

After you have completed your booking you will need to visit one of our offices below for credit card and signature verification. Your ticket will be issued once your credit card has been sighted.

How am I suppose to get to the Qantas Shanghai office before 5pm on a Friday when I arrive 6.30pm Friday!?

Anyone help me out with how I book and receive these tickets?

I do not understand how you are having an issue with eLong (or Ctrip for that matter if you choose to use them instead) - yesterday I booked a flt PEK-NKG for am Feb 4 on eLong without issue.

Firstly you did register to join eLong right? From there it is just a matter of step by step. Try again - I will pm you my skype details and we can go down that path if you have further issues.

Hi Cruiser Thanks for your kind offer however I managed to successfully book through eLong. I then phoned the MU Call Centre in Sydney and linked my QFF number to the PNR. Decided to overnight in Shanghai before continuing on to Beijing as a contingency and a very long day travelling given I've allowed myself 3 hours in the Sydney F Lounge before the flight :)

Glad to hear you are all set - o/n in SH prolly wise move. Staying Pudong or Puxi? Plenty night life SH - forget about getting sleep - in the next world you going to sleep forever - no need to get it in this one.

MU interline with QF and earn QFF. QF also sells a QF codeshare on MU from PVG to PEK, so they'd be the best options. As mentioned cheap first tickets are also available on elong and ctrip which are worthwhile
