The word out of China is that with the 60 years of Independence coming up they are going to put back some of the stronger restrictions on getting Visa's. So if you intend going get your Visa early.

Again :(
On second thoughts a good reason to not go !

That's typical. My 6 month multi-entry visa expires at the end of June. No doubt it will be a pain in the neck to get a new one again:(

Thanks for this info.

I'm told I'll have a trip SYD-PVG coming up soon and as it will be my first time in china it looks like it's time to read up!

First time in PVG vec...oh you'll enjoy that! Is it work or holiday?

My multi entry also expires soon :(

vec, i can give you a few hints on some bars to visit ! apart from that check out the fake market. Not the city i visit for 'fun' but better that Suzhou or Wexi for the weekends when in town for work.

Mrs vec is being sent over for work but she wont go unless I go along with her so I'm going to head over for a few weeks.

Any tips/tricks?

weeks !!! does she have weekends off ? you should try to visit some places other than just Shanghai.

- Don't worry about taking movies & tv series, just get 1$ copies over there
- get some suits and shirts made ( i havn't for a while but i will ask for the current prices, i have a good guy to go to )
- don't go to any bars i was going to recommend :D unless the mrs and you are fairly young and open minded and just want to have a bit of party.

Yea it's looking like a 2 week stint but still up in the air.

1. I have all the tv/movies I could ever want now so nope I don't plan to buy any.
2. Not really a suit kinda guy but if there are some good tailors there then will certainly get some articles made up if it's inexpensive.
3. I'll have to hit the bars myself while she is at work... :D

Thanks for the tips - how about other "must sees and dos" whilst there?

Do you know where you are staying yet vec? It's a big city, and a lot to do and see.
Also got a few favourite bars and restaurants (having spent 10 weeks there over the last 8 or 9 months)

Don't have any idea where we will be staying, I don't even know where our office is in Shanghai!

Can't wait though, I love seeing new places.

I alternated between the Four Points in Daning and the Sofitel Hyland on Nanjing Road. The Nanjing Road was definitely the best location of the two, though the Four Points was the better hotel.

Bar Rouge on the Bund was a favourite haunt, a little pricey, and well known for being frequented by "ladies of negotiable affection", but the view is impressive (and I mean of the city ).
For food, one place I went back to several times was the Coconut Paradise Thai on Fumin Lu. There was also a damned good French restaurant that I can't remember the name of.
Xintiandi is well worth a look for a European style eating out/drinking experience.
(why no Chinese restaturants of any description? Because after you've had Chinese for Lunch every day, and there are many many good Chinese restaurants of all regions that are pretty cheap, you'll probably want a change. I know I did!)
The Metro is very cheap and simple to use, and the Maglev is an excellent way to get to and from the airport. Ridiculously cheap too. Taxis are inexpensive, but most drivers don't speak a word of English, and the usual problem of fleecing tourists exists.

The fake market (walking distance from the Sofitel) is worth a visit, but you have to bargain hard.

If all else fails, a flight up to Beijing is cheap and easy to do for a weekend, with all the sights that can be seen there (I preferred Beijing by a long way) the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace....

Enjoy.

I don't think it's fair, it's their policy.

I don't think it's fair, but it's their policy. We have to follow rules.

What policy ??
Sorry i have to deal with CN on a daily basis and they sure make it hard to do business there !

Anyway with regards to policy in general i have no real problems with, i only have a problem with the fact that its not documented anywhere and that you ask somebody what the procedure is and it take ages for them to ask 20 other people to make something up just to make my life difficult !

[Note that this is an opinion on the bureaucracy, not any way related to the general people of China with who i get along well and have friends that live there, just wanted to say that before somebody attacks me for being anti Chinese]

You could try for an Apec card and not worry about Visa's for 2 week business visits for the next 3 years.

How could you when you also live in Singapore (at least part time!!)??:D:p

Cheers,

Ric

Wasn't the Visa's i was refering to with my comments it was all sorts of other things, sometimes as a company in China you can't even buy something off another company in China without so much tax dept paperwork including decelerations of where tax is paid etc. (i am talking about a $1200 purchase here) that you just wonder why you bother in the first place.

I should get an APEC card, last time i went to apply i did not bother because it was being help up by China due to the games, prior to that i had 2 years visa's, now they issue me 6 months last time !

China was about the only country i travel to in APEC that i need a visa for, the rest i already get access or simply don't visit.
