HI,

I was after access to the status run spreadsheet but am told that because I am a new member and have little AFF activity I cannot get access. I have asked how long do I need to wait but the answer is not forthcoming. I joined this group in January and have made about 16 or 17 posts and check it out most days. I enjoy reading the stories and tips and gripes and can relate to a lot of the comments and laugh at some of the others. I was really enjoying my time on here but now I feel I am not a part of the "community" as I am not good enough to get access. I noticed there are users with less posts (so less active) than me that have access.

edit: and I even signed up for AFF silver membership!!!

I would like the "owners" of the spreadsheet to please make a clear ruling as who gets access and when. This would make things clear, as many of you ask when questioning airline Terms and Conditions.

As was suggested to me perhaps the rest of the community would like to make comments based on the spreadsheet access as well and what their thoughts are?

This is in no way a dig any anyone, just concerned that we practice what we preach.

regards

I don't think the owners of the spreadsheet are under any obligations to share with anyone. You mention Terms and Conditions, implicit in that this is a commercial relationship, if so the question is what have you brought to the table to justify access.

As for my thoughts, I think that people are free to share or keep what they want, I may well have opinions on what I'd like them to share but recognise my opinions don't create any obligation on others to actually do what I want!

That's fine. I totally agree, but then why ask anybody to message requesting access?? why not just target the select few?

Iv been here for over 2 years and I didn't even know there was a status run spread sheet?

Because not everyone will want access and in any case there is too many people to use the 'select few definition'

Having said that I understand your concern but it is really up to the owner of the spreadsheet to decide as it is their property.

I disagree, the restriction is not about being good enough or otherwise. There is still a thread there about status runs and you can use that to ask questions. The real question here is about sharing information. Sure those using the spreadsheet might be happy, but they also risk missing out of the contributions of those who don't get access.

It's a relatively new development put together by one member. Also only for VA status runs, as I understand.

Again that's fine :) I did however ask, after being told I couldn't get access as I was a new member, how long do I have to be a member to gain access? Infact I asked that 3 times and I never received an answer. A simple request really I would have thought. And yes they are not obliged to give me an answer but common courtesy would suggest they would. I was just after some clarity from them and other people thoughts.

I really don't care about access to the spreadsheet, but on the flip side if I find a good deal will I be inclined to share it here now?? You can't have it both ways.

People tend to share information to those that have previously shared or helped them out, it takes time to build up an online reputation and most of the information is here if you care to read the threads, similar forums have similar areas and often the criteria is a minimum of a year and hundreds of posts as a guide, at the end of the day it's up to the owner to share the info how they see fit.

Its also important to recognise that it's come about because of an airlines quick reaction to previous opportunities and shutting them down, on the flip side the other airline has at present a far more active role on AFF yet most of our status runs are over a year old, I would suggest some of your frustration be pointed in that direction ;).

There's no set access rules because it's something thats just evolved over the past few months but 100 days + 100 posts seems to be the agreed minimum access requirement. If you want it enough you will wait.

This spreadsheet is (rightly) for established contributors to AFF not for 'fly-ins' looking for a quick solution to their status problems.

It is working EXTREMELY well at the moment (as evidenced by that 'rare' A47/50 deal over the weekend) and I hope it continues as is. As always, my thanks to lobo and the contributors - Im off on my first status run (A7) this Saturday.

I told you I didn't have a definitive answer, that I was guided by community standards and my impression of community standards was that new members, especially those who registered accounts since the doc was created should not be given access until they had shown themselves to be genuine members of that community and not airline sock puppets etc.

To be honest, the attitude you are displaying is kinda bringing out the 'soup naz_' in me, and I really don't like being that guy :/

In all honesty though, the spreadsheet is working excellently. lobo76, I appreciate your hard work with the spreadsheet!

I think my account was created prior to your document. :)

Look forget it, I don't want access any more. I enjoy flying, I enjoy reading this forum but I don't enjoy being judged by people that don't even know me. It's a shame I had to start a thread just to get an answer, sort-of. Feel free to delete this thread moderators as I am sure it is just taking up space.

Wow. I agree that your attitude isn't helping your case.

Instead of jumping up and down, why don't you just make a worthwhile contribution to the forum and try further down the track?

Indeed...

@Alister - I gave you the best answers I had, I also gave you some options that other less active members had used to verify themselves and finally I suggested this thread in case my view of the AFF members feeling on the matter was out of step. I really don't know how I could have been fairer to all involved.

IIRC the spreadsheet was only created in the last 3 weeks. It was also created from a very long pre-existing thread about VA status runs. So it might be good if we keep that context in place. As far as I read in that thread I thought the purpose was to benefit the community. I certainly agree that ownership solely remains with the creator, perhaps with some say from contributor. But if the spreadsheet has been created for the AFF community then it is also probably reasonable to ask about the expectations for gaining access as per this thread.

Basically it should be about being friendly and helpful in the end. I don't think asking the question here deserves comments about attitude and jumping up and down.

In terms of expectations for use of the spreadsheet. Another question that might be worth considering is what happens if a contributor wants to remove a status run? Are they free to do that? Or will there be some ill feeling with the owner of the spreadsheet?

, why don't you just make a worthwhile contribution to the forum and try further down the track?

What a contribution like posting a status run in the spreadsheet? Sorry but I couldn't resist, the spreadsheet creates a chicken and egg situation. How can some prove themselves if they can't get access to contributing? Perhaps another question for the spreadsheet owner to consider. I'm sure they have the answer.

Seriously the guy has asked a question at your suggestion, as it turns out. The comments about attitude are a bit out of line really. Instead of attacking the OPs attitude why not discuss the variables? Ultimately, it is your decision but some discussion to canvass AFF views would be good.

In fairness you've only got access to the public posts, there were also PMs where I was accused of discrimination and of making the OP feel unwelcome on the forum.

I want this sheet to be a community resource (if it was possible to make other users/mods admins of it I certainly would). I'm actually personally skeptical that Virgin are too bothered about getting access, but I've only been properly active on here for about 6-8 months so I've chosen to be guided by the experience and wishes of this community....

With your permission Lobo76 I will post the PM conversation for all to see :)

Yes sorry. I'm not trying to be unfair. If you did get such PMs I think it is all the more reason to have this discussion in public. Let those sending such PMs voice their concerns in public. (I also hope you reported PMs if warranted).

Personally, I'm not sure about VA motivations. I'm not sure they have considered the full consequences of the Sabre system and things like the change to sector definition.
