Hey AFF!

First time poster. Was recommended this website by a friend and I can honestly say I've spent many hours trawling through all the posts trying to bring myself up to speed.

A job change in August last year has seen my travelling quite a bit with the red roo. My SC run out on the 31st of July. I'm currently a PS but work has paid for a QP membership up until February 2013.

I'm trying to work out if it's worth doing a status run out of Brisbane to get the 160 SC I need to get bumped up to gold before the end of July or should I just save my points (64,000) considering I've already got QP membership til February next year and then just go for gold come August?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you do get to Gold, You'll have Qantas club access all the way to February 2014 as the Unused portion of paid QC will carryover after your Gold expires (assuming you don't requalify again). Of all the QF tiers, Gold is the one worth chasing in my opinion :) good luck.

It really depends on you travel patterns if you can get benefit of gold over qantas club + silver.

The main benefit would be that gold gives you OW Sapphire status. QC only gives you lounge access for Qantas, AA and BA (very limited). OW Sapphire gives you lounge access when traveling on other OW airlines.
Gold will give you better seat selection than silver.
Gold gives you a different (not necessarily better) baggage allowance than QC + silver.
Gold has a 75% FF bonus versus silvers 50% bonus. Not much use if you fly mainly short flights under the 1000 mile minimum. But can come in handy if you normally fly longer flights.

Personally I would go for it.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Seatbackforward: Didn't realise that regarding the paid membership. I guess that's incentive to have that paid membership as backup if I don't fly as much in the future etc.

Richie9x: I've got some flights to America coming up in September and I will also probably try take leave around Christmas to get away again so that's an incentive as well to help boost the points back up after a SC run.

Well, you, or rather your organisation, has paid for 12months membership, so if you are entitled to complimentary membership because you've reached Gold, then the paid for period is just carried over to when you no longer receive it complimentary.

But as Richie has pointed out, the benefits of Gold go beyond just the QC access..

definitely go for the Gold.

Like an idiot, I paid (through my employer (WoAG Corporate Scheme)) for 4 years of QP membership, and I've been WP ever since that year, don't plan to stop until I hit Lifetime Gold haha. But def go for Gold, platinum is a bit harder if you're not flying in Premium Classes (J or F)

160 SC is pretty easy ex BNE - a red e deal to TSV, JASA TSV to DRW via BNE and then a red e deal back to BNE would have it done! Around $400 and 24K points, but you also earn at least 8k of the points back.

Hey Damon. I think I may be the friend that recommended AFF to you? On twitter? Well glad you've joined and that you're already finding it a useful website!

Anyway, just thought I would put in my two cents worth: yes. Do it. If you've got some trips to the US (where you will find some awesome SCs runs for next years re-qualification) then you'll definitely enjoy benefits above and beyond PS and club membership. Use the points - with the travel you have book you'll start making them back soon anyway.

Alright so I think you have all convinced me that it is worth it.

Now I just have to try find the time to be able to try do a status run in a day preferably a weekend before July 31!

Thanks for all your ideas and advice. Much appreciated!

I did the JASA TSV/BNE/DRW ret. last year in J, think it was 48K points and about $250 fees, was a long day, but had the QFF double status offer, made it to SG.

Quick update.

Managed to pull it off with a day to spare as I did my first run yesterday which will send me to the lofty heights of SG.

Thanks for everyones hints and tips!

Well done, what did you end up doing?

Time was more important then points this time so that ruled out any runs that required overnight stays etc so I managed to BNE-MEL-ADL-BNE in around 8 hours for exactly 160sc. Probably wasn't the most efficient run or points spend but it did the trick considering my reassessment date is tomorrow.

Congrats Damon! There's a certain amount of anxiety that comes with status running but a few days before your membership year closes off. Experience tells me not to try and find 680 status credits and do it all in 3 weeks on domestic and trans-Tasman routes again.

Anyway, you'll like Gold, particularly on international it's worthwhile.
