Hi there,

My first question, and it's a doozy, sorry

I need 230 SC to attain Gold by 30th April, I'll be flying to the US 8th May, and the trip just might get me over the line. From (Premium Economy) MEL- LAX - DCA - LHR -MEL. I called up QFF to find out if they could extend some leniency. They can, but he couldn't say exactly how. Other than to say, come and ask you guys, then come back to them.

I am also flying SYD-MEL return this week and could do PER-MEL either before or within a week a of my return. These flights are worth about 80-90SC.

He said all off these flights could be considered.

His words were "if you could leave earlier we would consider your case" ;) I explained that I couldn't; he understood this but repeated his statement ;)

Is he saying that if I booked a flexible flight, set departure date for prior to 30th April, talk to them, then changed the date later on?? OR something else altogether??

Thanks in advance!

Im assuming you are not currently Gold as you said attain, as opposed to retain so 230 SC is quite a lot of SC needed to attain Gold, being approximately 1/3rd of the total. In my nearly 9 years as a SG, Ive found the qualifying year to reset exactly when it is supposed to, meaning that by the time your May trip commences, your SC will have reset back to zero. Good luck with it and let us know how it works out for you.

The way I see it you have two options… and I’d love to know additionally if you have Qantas Club (for lounge access in the US).

The first would be some sort of a status run in the next 12 days to get you 230SC and Gold and with that lounge access for your flights in the states (unless you have Qantas Club already, in which case there’s a better idea).

The second, and better idea would be to construct a status run while in the states, assuming you have some free time, and attain Gold there at the start of your year very easily, so by the time you get back to Australia you’ll have 23 months of Gold to go.

I like this thinking, but it can lead you astray by tempting you to do more SC runs in the remaining 11 months to get Plat status lol.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks folks for the speedy assistance, much appreciated. I do wonder though, if you've got any ideas on what the gentleman at Qantas Freq Flyer customer service was alluding to, when he suggested I book my US tickets to leave before the end of April. I know you can normally only claim the points after the flight, but he definitely suggested doing this and then calling them back. At which point he was confident they could afford some leniency and award my gold status based on the local flights and the US flight.

Ideas????

He also agreed that with prem economy flights to MEL-US-LHR-MEL I should be able to get the points I need.

Thanks again!

In the USA, fly AA and use the K/Y 'Up fares. You can get the required SC's easily and a lot cheaper than QF.

I'm in a rush at the moment, but a quick search here on AFF will uncover a thread about this in no time....

Its very unusual for QF to comp status before its achieved, in fact I have only recently heard of it happening and it gets rarer the higher the status you are trying to achieve. I suspect things are too late now, given the time left and school holidays complicating things with a lack of cheap flights.

I conveniently left that out of my post :p

Overall, I think paying for 230SC now, especially as JASA’s are likely to be out of the question now with the QF glitch, is a waste of money. Besides, you wont have a God card by your trip either which could complicate things.

I’d focus on qualifying in the US with a milage run as I previously posted for maximum value. It would mean no lounge access while you’re there, but as you left it to the last minute there’s not a lot that can be done for an acceptable price.

And I don’t think QF would comp you Gold.
