I have been fortunate or unfortunate to use the lounge at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The standard of the lounge leaves a lot of improvements required. The lounges are run by a 3rd party and the amenities are not up to standard. People entering the lounges with Platinum, credit cards issued by local banks get more attention than business class travellers. The newspapers are a week old and the lounge area is small. For a international airport with a large area, I find it amazing that there are no airline lounges run by one world or star alliance. How do they expect to get high end flyers with that sort of standard.

I am not too sure which lounge you visited. I have only used the Cathay Pacific lounge, which seems to do duty as the lounge for other OneWorld flights that go there (it had a sign calling it the JL lounge as well). SQ and TG both have lounges there as well, so would have thought that Star Alliance pax could use them?

The CX lounge is small and nothing special (and showing its age), but given the amount of OneWorld flights is probably adequate. While it was small, there were not a lot of people in there.

I agree with Oz_Mark. The CX lounge isn't big, but there is free WiFi, some work desks, free drinks and a small selection of food. It's much better than the nearby SilverKris lounge. The Malaysian Airlines lounge looks quite nice.

Which lounge did you visit that wasn't up to scratch?

And given that CX and JL are the only OneWorld airlines operating from KLIA (and JL is once a day, CX is three times plus a codeshare opped by MH), there does not really seem to be a need for any more OneWorld lounge facilities than the current CX lounge. I have found the CX lounge to be ok considering its servicing a 3.5 hour regional flight.

I am not sure which Star Alliangce airlines (besides SQ) operate from KLIA. But keep in mind that SQ is operating a shuttle service of less than 1 hour duration, so I would not expect them to be providing lounge services comparable to their SIN lounges that cater for long-haul passenger needs.

The MH lounges are very good, so if you want nice lounges at KLIA then fly with MH.

Thai have a lounge at KLIA. I flew business from BKK to KUL with TG once and used the Thai business lounge on the first floor and whilst small it was adequate considering there were only 4 of us in there for the time I was there. It had free wi-fi but a limited drink and food selection. But then again KLIA is such a disappointment for such a relatively new airport IMO.

Half right :) JL have two flights out of KUL one to Narita non stop, and one to Osaka via SIN. one plane goes KIX-SIN-KUL-NRT, while another does the reverse.

Been a while since I was in the CX lounge at KLIA (end 2005), but from what I remember it was a basic but reasonable lounge for the time I whiled away in it.

Hoping to head back to KL later this year, so will be interesting to see if any changes have been made.

Mrs SFSC and I are in the CX lounge at KUL at the moment waiting for JL722. Small lounge, no toilets within lounge, some minimal eats in a double warmer, packs of sandwiches, no bubbles, scotch is JW black. Anchor and Tiger canned beer. Lounge not crowded.
