Doing some research for a trip with the in-laws earmarked for Sept 2019:

Her parents (early 60s).
Us (early 30's)
Her sister & husband and 2yo (30's and they are coming in from ZRH)

The original plan involved Thailand for 2 weeks... easy, safe, known quantity. But now they're talking Sri Lanka, which I'm cool with but the more I read about it at that time of the year, the more I think its perhaps not the best idea.

Overall plan is a beach holiday, perched in a resort somewhere between MEL & ZRH to spend time together where none of us are working (like every other time someone visits the other).

Concerns with Sri Lanka are:
- South west is probably the most tourist friendly for the group we've got together, and easiest to get to.
- South west appears to be monsoonal, or on the cusp of it.
- South West Beaches arent safe for swimming (2yo & her parents in mind here + us in unknown beaches)
- Of the south west beaches, I read that two are protected by coral reefs, but still quite rough?
- North East season is in full swing at that point, but is it too quiet and/or remote to get to? I can't imagine its high on her sister & 2yo agenda's for a 6-7hr car/train/bus trip across the island to get to Trinco/etc, particularly to/from the airport with a ZRH flight in mind.
- North East 'too quiet' for a trip like this?
- We will likely all be arriving into Colombo on different dates/times - so individual groups making their way to the eventual destination. Unless we arrange it to group up in Negambo or something?
- How difficult is moving around locations on the North East Coast?

I really want to push the North East as a viable option (i read of many wreck diving locations there!) - but my gut is putting it in the 'too hard' basket due to the cross island travel.

Anyone have experience they can share?

I'm surprised this thread hasn't attracted any replies. Lets give it a bump along.

I'm not a beach person myself (nor have visited the north-east!), but if you scroll down to Sri Lanka on this thread, Destination Trip Reports you can see what others here have found.

I believe that things have become much easier for exploring the north-east. I would strongly suggest you hire a car & driver. I am assuming a group of 7? I am not sure what sort of vehicle he currently has but Lucky who we used (and quite a few other AFF's ) was excellent & I am sure he will provide good advice. Send me a PM if you would like his details.

Lucky would be a good choice.

We should start asking for AFF referral discounts :)
