Passengers on the world's biggest plane had to switch aircraft in Singapore after the first commercial superjumbo accidentally touched the grass on the side of the tarmac as it left the departure terminal.

Singapore Airlines said no one was hurt in the incident involving the A380 aircraft bound from Singapore to Sydney.

This is the first known mishap involving the Airbus aircraft since it entered commercial service last October.

Yeah; if it was a QF aeroplane they would be talking about the "passengers terrifying brush with death" and covering exactly what happened with interviews with the shocked passengers. This is more a "Small earthquake in Chile, not many dead" article :)

I was wondering what even the basic newsworthiness of the story was..Depenidng on the exact circumstances it does seem a routine mishap. Mayeb because it was the first A380 one - but tehre was always going to be a first.

My son and his wife were on the flight, they were transferred to another aircraft after a delay of over 4 hours. Apparently the "truck" pushing the A380 back for take off lost control of the plane with result that the plane rolled on to the grass area on its own and was stucked there at an angle. My son said he heard a loud noise as if something snapped before the plane rolled on to the grass.

About 100 passengers were offered overnight stay at Singapore or indirect flights but my son opt for the next direct flight back to Sydney. To make matters worst, this accident occurred at Terminal 3 which is the new Terminal at Singapore which opened two days ago.

Driving past the intl terminal today I noticed SQ221 was a 744. Doesn't sound too serious so the A380 should be back soon

Given that my Jeep gets about 9KM to the litre I am thinking I should be taking the A380 to the shops...
Only if Mrs simongr is going to a clothing or shoe shop

shame they didn't build a little bit of "off-road" technology into the A380, it could have gotten itself going again;)

Given that it is an aeroplane , it seems to have pretty decent well off-road technology built in

Interesting comment here on the airbus site:

The A380 has unmatched fuel efficiency, consuming less than three litres per passenger per 100 kilometres

Given that my Jeep gets about 9KM to the litre I am thinking I should be taking the A380 to the shops...

Probably a bit more room for parcels too!
