I'm travelling to Singapore for work and they will only pay for the lowest fare which happens to be Singapore ticketed and metal. Fare class is non earning for VA points or status.
I can (and will) pay about $100 to upgrade to Singapore ticketed status and points earning class, or $200 for virgin ticketed.
I just wanted to check; as velocity gold travelling Y, will the VA ticketed fare earn the bonus points? And if so, is that the only difference in the two tickets?

VA ticket will be an 'eligible sector' too if that is important. At the budget end I think you earn marginally more points on a Economy ticketed by SQ (1pt per mile) than you do on V Deal ticketed by VA (0.5pt per mile). It only comes back to parity with the at Platinum Status Bonus.

If you do take a VA ticketed flight on SQ - need to keep an eye on Velocity. I've just returned from Europe - on a VA ticket - but where three legs were on EY metal. They credited miles for each of those three legs on the EY table and gave me no 'eligible sectors' (since corrected after pointing out the error of their ways). They more of less acknowledged that this error is common.

One thing which is a deal breaker for me is that the SQ ticketed flights earn full economy status credits. I always book H class on SQ (No change fees) as the equivalent V Flexi fare which would also earn full SC's is much higher.

Is H class on SQ the "Flexi" fare in the booking engine? 12 months stay and no change fee. When you say full economy, does that mean you get 80SC instead of 40SC for a return PER-SIN SQ flight?

Is there an easy way to see which fare bucket SQ's website is quoting you? I know if you view the full fare breakdown, it gives you a code (e.g. "
WLPR90" I've read elsewhere people suppose the second character is the fare class) - It's "Flexi Saver". VA's website is ~$300 more than SQ's, for the same flights. VA page source indicates they're "L" class -- is there a similar trick to look at the fare code on SQ's website?

I'm tempted to think that $300 is worth less than the 5,868 points I'd miss out on, (+ I guess 450 from the extra credit card spend).

Eligible sectors shouldn't be an issue for me, I'll get to 4 pretty easily in a year.

As a VA SG flying on SQ metal/flight number, I'd still get the additional baggage and lounge access, right?

There is. On screen where you select the flights, there's a link down the bottom "View Summary of Fare Conditions", clicking that link will bring a up a table of fare conditions. The first letter in the "Fare basis code" gives you the fare bucket. In your example, WLPR90, it would be a W class fare.

Thanks. SQ have some good deals at the moment for Japan in Jan/Feb. I know it's a bit more of a dog-leg SYD-NRT via SIN, but given the sale, it looks like I'd end up with a fare that will cost about as much as QF/JAL, but get me over halfway to re-qualifying gold (60+60+60+60 SCs from what I can see?), which is pretty big. Couple that with the lounge in SIN and a short layover, it shouldn't be too bad?

Wish I had the cash to justify flying J, as on the A380 it looks awesome, cattle class will be where I go.
