Hi all,

looking at heading to South Korea in Oct next year, potentially with side trip to Japan.

I know QF to Japan is hard to get with reward points. Are there any other Star Alliance or options with VF that are worth considering?

QF availability to Japan for for Oct 22 is pretty good at the moment. I know this a VFF thread however if you have QF points CX would be another option. If just using VA points the only option would be SQ.

If Star Alliance was an option, there would be Asiana which flies SYD-ICN direct and sometimes has 1 J award seat available on this route.

Aeroplan always shows heaps of OZ availability on that route or are you suggesting it’s phantom availability?

Not suggesting that the Air Canada website is showing phantom availability. I've seen lots of dates with availability on SYD-ICN but it's normally only for 1-2 seats in J.

Sooner or later Asiana will be sucked into Korean Airlines, they are in ST with Delta.
With no forseeable transfer of points from VFF to KF at the moment, the only way would be to go, would be to look into redemption seat, using VFF points sitting on an SQ plane, SQ will probably have less seats for member of partner airlines, and have more seats for their own KF members, (((or pay and fly Y or premY, $$$ I know))).
Unless you have a lot of KF miles itself.
Some on here say one day soon, we will be able to transfer points from VFF to KF miles, but at the moment, its no go.
If you do have a KF account, but not a lot of KF points, or no KF points, just book flights from Au - SIN - ICN with SQ, pay for the fare with $$$ and earn the few miles in Y/premY.
Or if you want, Korean Airlines FF program (Skypass) points does last 10 years, so that is a plus, vs SQ's 3 and no ifs no buts way to extend that, covid being the only current reason for miles extensions, of course.
Doing Au - Korea flight, would save time, unless you want/have something/things to do in the SEAsia part to make a trip there worthwhile.
Too many things to consider at the moment, many options.
But for the time being, if you have VFF points to "burn", and wanting to go up there, maybe try to get redemption seats with SQ, using VFF points, as no transfers of VFF points to KF miles for the time being, it appears/seems.
Must remember that as of now, Virgin is flying by itself, and not in a formal alliance.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

HA could be an option if you have plenty of VFF points to burn
They seem to have decent award availability on SYD-HNL and when I’ve searched on the AA site in the past there has been good availability HNL-ICN.

Some HA flights, are flown on their behalf by UA though.
So burning VFF points will get him half way to ICN, but a long way around!
Also depends on what nationality the OP has, and if he is eligible for US ESTA.

Thanks! Always so informative AP!

UA and HA codeshare but UA don't operate flights on behalf of HA.
