Hi

My husband and I both have 250,000 ff points each, we have just made Silver. We are going to Santiago in May or June - flexible dates. and there are 4 of us. We will be booking Classic awards and would like business. As we dont have enough points to fly business both ways for 4 of us, was wondering if I book using Classic Awards, business for the way there and economy return. once we have completed the first leg - Cairns to Santiago in business, do we get the points from that flight? If so, could I then change class selection for the return flights? ( I have been trolling through all of the questions and answers this weekend and there are so many) Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.,

Hi & welcome.

Unfortunately Classic awards do not earn any points.

You might want to consider purchasing points from QF for your flight bookings.

I'm afraid you might find it extremely difficult to find business class availability for 4 people on the same flight at relatively short notice. You'll read from other threads on here that even with plenty of forward planning family groups will often have to split on to different flights to fly in business/first class rewards given how few award seats are typically available in the premium cabins. If you're happy to do this my suggestion is to reduce the number to 2 and search availability on the Qantas site before worrying too much about how to get more miles. I had a quick look and there seem to be some days in June with business availability for 3, but not 4.

I have been told that the Sydney - Santiago flight is never fully booked so as to keep the weight down as the distance is getting to the maximum range of the plane. It would be unlikely that reward seats would come up too often.

This is just what I have been told, dont know if any truth in it.

As told classic rewards dont earn points but you could try JASA keeping the points at the minimum and pay the differance

I know from experience there are not a lot if SYD-SCL award flights in any category. Would be very surprised if you could get 4 together.

Regret to say, but I think you're dreaming. I managed last October to get a single JASA in early May from PER to SCL for about 400K points IIRC. Routing is PER-SYD-AKL on QF, then AKL-SCL QF codeshare on LAN metal, returning SCL-SYD-PER on QF.
