Good news for those from the USA coming to Oz. The smart-gate queues may start to lengthen ...

Global Entry and Nexus/Sentri Users Now Eligible for SmartGate in Australia

... members of Global Entry or Nexus/Sentri are now automatically eligible to use Australia’s SmartGate automated border processing system when arriving in the country. No enrollment is required and travelers can bypass the passport/immigration lines and proceed to a SmartGate kiosk. ...

Smartgate - US Global Entry Program Trial

US Global Entry Trial brochure.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it coming given the following are already allowed:

Global Entry is open to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Dutch citizens, South Korean citizens and Mexican nationals. Canadian citizens and residents may enjoy Global Entry benefits through membership in the NEXUS program.

Global Entry has an application fee and interview requirement, so simply giving Australians access to this process would not be truly reciprocal!

And the reciprocal access to US programs ??
Hardly reciprocal...more like Australia has outsourced its border controls to a foreign government.

The US government (global entry) gets to decide which US passport holders get automated entry into Australia, and the US government (global entry) also gets to decide which AU passport holders get automated entry into the States?

Seems like the US government is going to be running the border in both directions!

No chance of the reverse happening for Australians with visa waiver docs trying to enter US?

I think I will move back to the normal ques as the Smartgates will soon be full of people and I bet most will have no idea how to use them.

Well if Smartgate gets clogged up the express pass becomes even more important.

Hopefully there will be more gates available and good instructions provided.

On my recent trip to NZ it was lovely to enter and exit so very quickly using Smartgate.

They are planning to add more. Also Investigating outbound smartgate too.

Anything new on reciprocity?

I received the following response from the government in March in regards to reciprocity.

"Customs and Border Protection, in cooperation with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, is also engaged in discussions with the US Department of Homeland Security to identify if it is feasible for Australian passport holders to access the US Global Entry program."
