Given the "inspiration" of the new Qantas International Economy meal thread, I thought I would start SQ version as well.

So I flew SQ37 LAX-SIN and SQ231 SIN-SYD in early January 2023 in Y. You may think I am insane to take this route in Y but it was the only way to come back to Sydney from USA using points for 4 people in early January when I tried to use points, as the cash fare was ridiculously expensive. It was 55k Krisflyer miles for Y Saver for each person.

SQ37 was an 18 hours flight. First Meal, serving at hour 2:

Second Meal, serving at hour 8:

Third Meal, which is not really a meal at all, serving at hour 13. They really should have proper 3rd meal for such a long flight. They also provide sandwich snacks as well:

They did give me a Singapore Sling when I asked. So that help the flight a bit. Full flight map in case you are interested:

I arrived at SIN at 8 am and we had 16 hours transit at SIN before taking SQ231.

For SQ231, SIN-SYD, only 1 meal was served as it was a sleeper service. It was served as the morning breakfast.

The food themselves was presented and actually tasted quite OK. The 18 + 8 hours in Y hurts my bum very much, and took a couple of days to get over the jet lag.

The good news is that for our next SQ flights to/from Europe, we will be flying J all the way as I managed to book 4 * J Savers as soon as it was available.

The similar duration flight QF9 only has 2 meal service - start and end

The SQ37 is basically a 4pm departure (SIN destination time)

So a 6pm "dinner" and 6am "breakfast" with a "supper" in the middle would make more sense - as a passenger. But I can see why SQ made the 2nd meal a big one - because that's breakfast LAX time and the body clock will think it's breakfast time.

But the meals look good

Did they have inflight snacks?

Yes the inflight snacks is the “third meal”. They have instant noodles (which I got), or sandwiches, or chips/chocolate etc. You have to ask for it though. Most people were trying (and failed) to sleep at that time.

@kamchatsky those Y meals look excellent! Especially, dare I say, catered out of LAX and not SIN.

I guess they are obviously mass produced, but at least they don’t look as though they poured out like Qantas economy meals look. Some of the pics presented in the equivalent Qantas thread, frankly look disgusting.

No 18 hour flights in my experience but I have done numerous circa14 hour Y flights (EK SYD-DXB, QF SYD-LAX/SFO, even AA NRT-DFW many years back) which weren't too tough. The better legroom on EK helps. Apart from the meals, the snacks in galley keeps me feeling content. Never felt tempted to have alcohol. Consuming too much food / beverages meant frequent lavatory visits.

Doesn't look most pleasant. Does it pass your taste test?
Yeh, it didn't look great, and It was very much comfort food, but it did taste good and there was enough meat in it to feel like the airline wasn't taking the p#@ss. (Some carriers, I won't mention names, have gravies like this and you have to fish around for the 1-2 chunks of meat in them).

We had the boxes on a short flight coughet to Singapore… it was really good! I ordered an Indian vegetarian meal and it came with yoghurt, pickles and accompaniments. The box does a good job to keep the contents in good shape.

Some improvements coming …
