On an award PER-BKK around xmas and was looking forward to upstairs on a 747 SIN-BKK however it seems they have replaced the aircraft with a 777-300.

Anyone know why the megatops have been pulled from this route?

SQ are retiring some old 747-400's.
Also refits to some planes and new entries to the fleet (777-300ER and A380's)

No real idea why maybe somebody else does but i did only hear about some older 744's being retired.

SQ are posting following on their website:

Notice for passengers booking on SQ285/SQ286:

We are operating these 2 flights with a leased Boeing 747-400 aircraft
and would like to inform you ahead of time, that there will be some cabin
differences. However, we are pleased to inform you that the product
offerings in all three classes onboard the aircraft are comparable to what we
offer in our own Boeing 747 aircraft.

(SQ285/SQ286 is the SIN/AKL service). Looks like they are shuffling aircraft around a fair bit.

They've leased two MH 744's which will be running that SIN-AKL-SIN route. I guess the cabin will still be the MH product.

Not long ago the 744 was pulled off AKL due to a/c shortage, and in its place a 2 class 772ER was deployed. But having noted the folly of the change, and yet still dealing with a/c shortage - they decided to lease MH a/c just for that route. The interiors are completely MH - the seat map for the exMH a/c are different from SQ 744s and can be found on singaporeair.com (the fourth 744 map).

I haven't heard of AKL getting the new product but a little bird has hinted at BKK and PVG being next in line...
