Effective 1 Nov, there will be significant changes to the Star Alliance earn/burn tables (or more accurately significant reductions to premium class earn rates, and far less significant reductions to burn rates). This will mean that for all intensive purposes, Airpoints will be useless for earning rewards from travel on star alliance, as it removes the handful of semi-decent earns that remained in the program.

The reductions in premium class are 50-75% (ie new earn levels between 25% and 50% of what they used to be), eg Australia/Asia down from 150 to 55 AUD Airpoints$, Australia/North America J from 260 to 120 AUD airpoints$.

Meanwhile a reduction in the burn tables in the order of 15-25% will mean points earned already, are in theory, more valuable (however I will wait and see, currently NZ do not charge fuel surcharges on tickets, the reductions seem to be the order of magnitude of many fuel surcharges, which could mean the reduction is all smoke and mirrors, pardon my cynicism about anything NZ does with Airpoints.

This would have to make Airpoints probably one of, if not the most pathetic programs in star alliance, if not in any alliance, in the world.

Excluding NZ, which earning table doesn't change, the only star alliance partner you can credit to VA is SQ.

NZ was easy way to keep star gold (with travel in J between Australia and Asia), and no fuel surcharges on award tickets meant the earn/burns were viable. Whilst the status earn has not changed, the airpoints dollars means this is no longer worthwhile.

I never found airpoints dollars to be great for burning...

I never found Airpoints to be great for anything. Just amazed that people still use it so much.

Until this year it was great for confirmed Gold Elite "standby" upgrades; of which I availed myself of freely.

Not any more ... :(

Try $950 LAX-MEL-LAX fares via AKL upgraded to Business and selecting seat 1A/1K upon ticketing.

Sadly, such is no more ... :-|

Yep they were also an OK for infrequent travellers between Asia and Australia in business class to pick up star gold (eg 2 returns xx_-SIN-YYY , xx_ being in Australia, YYY in Asia, gets very close to earning star gold initially, and would certainly allow it to be retained), and at the same time pick up some airpoints to your example above (albeit as a gold with lesser chance of upgrade). Based on this earning pattern, there were also some redemption sweet spots given they don't charge +++'s on partner airlines. But that's all gone down the plughole as NZ by the day become more and more like Air Asia ;)
