Should I make a quick dash to USA to see my beloved?

I am in a long distance relationship. My BF lives a couple of hours north of Los Angeles in California.
So. We normally see each other every 3 - 4 weeks for a long weekend.

Should I make a quick dash to USA to see him now and come back before end of March, before Qantas/Virgin grounds their international flights? My intuition says NO - too much risk. What do you think?

Also - any ideas how long before USA closes its borders completely?

And how long before USA and/or Australia reopens the borders?

Are we really going to be separated til at least mid June? Or do you think it will be even longer? I am saying mid june because that's the date Virgin have suspended their international flights until.

I have been following the news/on-ground reports from USA pretty closely and I know they are in for a very rough ride.

Would love some advice here.

If you go be prepared to be stuck there for 3 months.

There's a reason why both Australia and the US has told its citizens to return home immediately.

No.

USA is about to get very ugly.

Even more no as you would have no medical cover in the USA at a time of crisis.

This will not change anytime soon, but that does not mean you should dash now as hard as it may be emotionally.

Well California is now in lockdown so will you be able to get back before the end of March.
Will planes keep flying?
Things escalating fast so a very high chance you won't get bak to Australia.
LA Mayor has issued a Stay at Home order.

I wouldn't chance it.

Good to see you have seen reason!

No, no, no and no. Consider the public health risk of travel generally, the catastrophic financial consequences if you get sick in US (no travel insurance), 14 days isolation and the distinct possibility you will be stuck for a long time.

Cheers skip

No., don’t go.

Closed borders is not the issue if you get to America as Australia will let you return (assuming you are a resident or citizen of Australia).

If you arrive in US you will be subject to the quarantine for 14 days For anyone arriving into the US.

Then you have to find a flight back (departing after the 14 day period). This will take you into April, after Qantas has stopped international flights. Qantas has no international flights to September is the latest I gather from another thread. Virgin seems to be to June at the moment.

Assuming you cannot find a suitable flight home, you will have also breach US visa regulations making your next visit that much more difficult.

Hey guys, appreciate all your responses. I agree.

Curious why you are saying I might not be able to get back before end of March. I have a reward flight LAX - SYD booked for 25 March just in case, which I will probably cancel shortly. But I think Virgin are committed to flying until end of March - do people think otherwise? And, if I have symptoms of cold/flu or a moderate temperature, has there been a direction to VA airline staff in LAX to deny boarding? I am guessing those would be the only 2 reasons where I wouldn't be able to get back - flights ceasing earlier than announced and being denied boarding due to symptoms?

Obviously there could be heaps of other crazy random reasons like a freak storm etc, but I am just looking for the high-probability reasons.

Have you considered the 14 day isolation requirement? I’m pretty sure you won’t be allowed to leave your accommodation to take a flight back during this period.

Hmm. Did I miss a really important memo here? I haven't heard about the mandatory 14 day isolation in USA yet. Is that real?

You would have to be loco to consider travelling - anywhere other than your local supermarket.

Get a local BF, but don't go with 1.5m of him

They say love makes you crazy :) But seriously can someone please give me a link to the "14 day isolation for all arrivals in USA" that people are suggesting? Also, please don't hurt me. I am 99% not going. :)

California is in total lock down - they don't want you or anyone else.

Travelling anywhere while you've got symptoms related to Covid-19 is just reckless. Not just for you but the hundreds of people you would come into contact with while doing so.

Don't go, no matter how much you miss your BF.

Get skype, whatsapp, whatever but don't leave the country.

Hey - thanks for your reply. I definitely wouldn't travel if I had symptoms. I would have to stay there.

I forgot something, Mousey. Welcome to AFF:)

Australia is not currently a country with a US quarantine requirement, but you can expect other countries to be added to the list once they reach the threshold of “sustained local transmission”. At current spread this may be days away in Australia, or the US may order a general inbound international travel restriction as many other countries have done.

California has just proclaimed a stay home requirement for everyone. We don’t know what exactly this means, but based on what is happening in many countries there is the risk you would be turned back, as your travel is not essential.

Something new every day, and noone can give definitive advice about tomorrow.

My partner is currently in Chicago visiting family and is due back in Australia Monday morning. The latest travel requirements have meant as she is a temporary Australian resident (who lives and works in Australia) she can't return until she gets authorisation from Australian immigration. I've been told to do an online form that doesn't have USA as an option then told just wait for it to be updated before she can submit it ( which on Australian time will be some time next week). I think she will have to move her flights and hope she gets clearance and that USA won't impose any further restrictions.

Unfortunately this is tough times atm and I would recommend not to travel. I didn't want her to leave but her mum's 60th was too important to her not to. It's a tough time around and I would say don't travel but if you must then accept that thing may go pear shaped.
