Decisions, decisions...

So i just realised i have a transit in KUL arrive 830pm leave 9am the next day.

Should I stay overnight in the slumber rooms or book a hotel nearby (RM 120).

MH F lounge slumber room is ok, but not that comfortable... but it is free! And saves me a trip out of the airport...

I've used the slumber rooms before and they were fine.
Note that there are only 4 or 5

We stayed overnight at the Sama Sama hotel which is connected by walkway to terminal 1, buggies do the trip, it's only a couple of minutes. It was less than $100, great room, couldn't fault anything about the stay.
Only down side was that we flew into terminal 2, so had to get the train across to terminal 1, but you won't have that problem.

That's probably a bit long too long of a transit for a slumber room

Ah Sama Sama is over my budget :)

In the end i booked a night at the Sri Enstek hotel (Welcome to Sri Enstek Hotel - Your cultural stay) on Agoda for RM90... which is like A$28 :) Now I need to book their shuttle which costs RM11 one way...

I'll keep that in mind for next time, let us know how it goes, please!

You do realise it's 21km from the airport (the far side of Sepang Circuit for the F1 fans) so at least 25min by shuttle.

As an alternative to the shuttle, Google tells me an Uber is MYR35

Almost as quick to get the KLIA Ekspres into Sentral and a cheap hotel nearby

We are all different.

The slumber rooms are fine IMHO, and not used very much, so never had an issue with availability.

Sama Sama Express in the sattelite building is quite ok. Think I booked it for ~AUD80 for 6 hours and has views of runway.

Immigration queues at KUL are horrendous and unless you have fast track (business class) can take an hour or so each way.

I've stayed at Concorde Inn twice a few years back. Very close to airport with free shuttle to/from airport. Can't seem to find availability these days. The AirAsia Tune hotels are also an option.

And fallback option are some cheap hotels near Sentral not far from where the Skybus drops off.

I stayed in the slumber room last week. The only hiccough for me was turning up at the lounge at 2230 after arriving on MH to be told that the lounge was same day only, and I should come back at midnight. I didn't want to argue the point, and I have not had that response in the past. So I spent an hour in the terminal reading and walked into the lounge about 2330.

If you are arriving at 2130, you may not get in immediately.

I was the only one to use one that night, and have never had trouble with availability in the past.

Gday

I disagree with the comments about the immigration queues. I have flown in and out of KL multiple times in the past three months on both Y and J and never had to wait more than 10 minutes. When in J I have never had a queue. There is a special immigration queue for J and F easily visible by the red carpet. I think on the way out it was counter 29 and 30 which was right in the middle.

Pele.

KUL inbound and outbound immigration are poor. You were lucky.

I have waited 45 minutes and over an hour. I don't think it's nice when 2 immigration officers are processing over 50 people in their queue and one decides they will go on 15 minute break without replacement. In October last year at KLIA2 I almost missed flight thanks to immigration and then secondary security screening for all gates.

Something is definitely wrong. I will seriously reconsider any travel via KUL unless there are any significant improvements.

So a quick review on the Sri Enstek hotel.

Arrived into KUL on a domestic flight. Previously gave the hotel my flight number etc and arranged for a shuttle in advance (RM11 one way) at 9pm. Surprisingly, when I landed, there was no one to pick me up at the designated pickup area. I emailed the hotel and they almost immediately wrote back and said a shuttle was sent to pick me up. Ended up waiting 20/25mins or so for the shuttle to come. So it got off to a bad start.

Ride to the hotel was 20mins. Roads were generally clear without much traffic.

Arrived at reception and they said that they had put my shuttle request into the system, but were unsure why the shuttle was not dispatched on time. Very friendly front counter staff I must say.

The hotel is in the middle of the town town centre with PLENTY of foods options around. There are two local muslim food eateries around the corner from the hotel (see one of the pics). And a burger stand selling the local Ramly Burger - or at least the patties were (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramly_Group). Ate a burger and also at the local muslim eatery. The latter sold non-alcoholic beer called "Barbican" :p

Also saw a Pizza Hut and KFC around the corner. And a specialist satay restaurant! Saw a western family from the hotel go to the KFC. Why would you do that when there are so many other food choices around? :(

Room wise was basic. I prefered the bedding and the mattress versus the slumber room - so this is a win. Small room but functional. Requested a "quiet room" at the back as I heard on tripadvisor it could be noisy. Bad mistake for this request as the back is a small back street which unfortunately had a restaurant kitchen that was closing (11pm) so there was a lot of noise with pots/pans and also woks being scrapped etc. After a while I requested to be moved to another room and they gave me one without windows (hard to describe it exactly - but it is one of those rooms sandwiched in the middle of the floor, between the front and the back of the building). Perfect. Hot tip - if you don't want any noise from the road / back restaurant, this is the room type to go for as you only get corridor traffic. For me I will book this sorta room next time.

Next morning, caught the 7am shuttle back to KLIA and got back in 20mins again. Note the shuttle leaves from the hotel every hour. My flight was at 925am from the main terminal - next time I will wing it and leave at 8am and am travelling HLO. :D

All in all. cost me RM90 +RM22 for shuttle. So, it is very good value. And I will do this again for similar timed transits.
Look forward to trying to satay restaurant and other local muslim eateries soon.
