Hey folks, about to book MEL-SIN on SQ. For the same flights, SQ is $100 more expensive than booking through VA. Status credits would be the same and I'll get a few more points (thanks to status bonus) and eligible sectors booking through VA.

I have heard in the past that it's difficult to select seats on a SQ/VA codeshare - I'll be in Y so this is important! ;) Anyone able to share tales of success in this area?

Very limited success if any pre-allocating seats in economy.

Some have reported success pre-allocating seats in business class via call centre.

I've only had any joy by negotiating at check-in, which is a touch too late really if specific groups of seats are coveted.

I wonder why this functionality is lacking in the otherwise fairly tight and works-well relationship? I noticed that booking through online aggregators very often allows one to choose seats (depending on the actual website used) ... so why not from VA's booking engine?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

OK booking through SQ it is. I doubt I'll be glad I "saved" money if I end up stuck in a middle seat both ways.

I booked with SQ, but had issues where I couldn't select my seat anyway. I just logged on when online check-in opened and was always able to get a window seat (my pref) on full loaded flights. But obviously not always going to happen

If you find a way to do this, I will be very impressed. I'm struggling with a VA booked AIRNZ metal flight with seat allocations. VFF keep telling me they'll arrange it, the next person says it can't be done, AirNz don't want to know me.

I don't think this is just Singapore that doesn't integrate properly here.

Okay, a little trick I've discovered – jump on the mobile SQ site with your SQ PNR and you'llget pretty good seat selection availability. Not sure if it will stick as I've only just discovered it.

Let me know how you go. Maybe I'm lucky?

Is it worth the risk? I managed to get aisle seats towards the middle of the cabin on a normal SQ booking. Quite happy I have aisle seats.

It seems to automatically allocate something upon booking with VA (tends to be based on your window/aisle preference).

Then, you can go onto SQ Mobile, enter your PNR/last name and manually select seats.

Not sure where the risk lies... I suppose you could lose your original selection but seems unlikely. I'll be flying on this booking next week so I'll let you know if it sticks.

Just checked in at the airport and very happy to report that my selections made through the mobile site have stuck. Which means A380 upper deck for today!
