I'm a solo traveller with no status all set to fly QF107 in Y in a few weeks. I'm reluctant to pay to seat select as the choice I have is minimal, row 52 and back. The plane looks fairly empty on Expert Flyer. I'm toying with paying and booking a seat in the middle that has the window and aisle free. I'm thinking it may turn off people from booking those seats on either side of me leaving me with a whole row to myself. Obviously this could majorly backfire on me so I'm looking for opinions.

Would you avoid the window or aisle in a row where someone was already sitting in the middle?

I'm a window person, so I'd still go for the window seat next to an occupied middle seat if all others are already taken and I'm travelling by myself. Lucky for you I'm not flying on QF 107 in the next few weeks...

No, I wouldn't avoid choosing a window seat just because someone chose a middle seat, I would go ahead and select the window seat just as I imagine a person who liked aisle seats would select an aisle seat despite someone already being in the middle.

Looking at a seatmap that has unselected seats has no bearing whatsoever on how full the flight is as many of those seats will be allocated to passengers who don't obtain their seat numbers until they arrive at the airport.

I think $25.00 is a reasonable fee to be able to select an aisle or a window seat. If you select a middle seat expect to remain there. A flight will hardly ever depart with empty window seats because they are very popular.

You may as well not bother to pay to pre-select a seat and just take whatever you're given at the airport. If you do then get a middle seat at least you can take comfort in the fact you didn't pay $25.00 for it.
